In answer to the threads title, HBS still actually has a decent amount of time for minor changes. This game is not physically releasing and this means there is no hard deadline for final code to make physical media. The game is a digital product that is sent to Steam and it then gives out copies with game codes. They have, literally until likely about an hour before launch to finalize code and get it into Steam for distribution.
This assumes they do no testing to the code they release. As a programmer, this is a bad idea!

I think the larger point was that HBS can distribute the most up-to-date build of the game on the day of release, because they don't need to copy it to physical discs that need to be packed and shipped to stores a month in advance.

A game released on CD may be V.1.0, and in the month between when that build was distributed on CD, and release day, the developers squashed more bugs and are ready with V.1.1. Digital distribution means that we'll get V.1.1 right off the bat.

If HBS is still balancing stuff and testing features an hr before launch, then something has gone terribly wrong. We really don't know the state of the game right now so I'm assuming it's all hands on deck and crunching bugs and optimizing the code over there.

Most of what I want to change balance wise is literally changing one number to another so I'll leave the HBS team to concentrate on stuff I can't do with a notepad. :p

Balancing, probably not. Most likely bug squashing from here to a few weeks after release. That gives enough time after release for significant player feedback, so that any balance changes will be made with lots of consideration and context.

Kiva tweeted today about an economy balance change that was just made. In fact, HBS can keep fine tuning the balance right up to launch day and just release a day 1 patch if they want.

Keep in mind they still have a bunch of stretch goals to finish plus a bunch of other stuff. The team will be busy for a while yet post launch.

As for balance, I'm glad Kiva upped the maintenance cost and it seemed we just need to change a 1 to 0 if we don't want immortal mechs (or 0.5 for a 50/50 roll). Now, assuming I can change salvage part requirement from 3 to 5 just as easily, I'll be all set.

Personally, I wish HBS can focus on missed features like infantry as a free-LC and leave the balancing to the modders.

That was the beauty of the BATTLETECH Live Support Team (BT:LST mentioned in the Kickstarter. It would focus on BATTLETECH and permit the remainder of Team HBS to rest, refit and when appropriate, pursue HBS's next Big Thing. Hopefully we eventually get some indication if HBS is on track to stand up a BT:LST or not.
