Is there piety in Europa Universalis 4?

I'm totally confused by this and I assume it's an easter egg put in by paradox but...

My friend is playing as the ottoman, and suddenly he gets an event to help the poor. His reward?
He loses 70 ducats and gets 10 prestige and 25 piety.

I didn't know there was piety in EU4.

If you look in the religion tab, you will see a slider for piety. Both extremes have advantages and disadvantages mentioned there.

The piety mechanic actually makes large Muslim powers very scary. They get to choose between a huge morale boost and stronger missionaries, or a very large boost to manpower and tax and reduced tech cost. Feels like Catholics get the short end of the stick for once which is nice

Well yeah but it's a far cry from EU3 where the Catholics also got a huge pile of extra bonuses just for being the superior religion as well...

Which the Muslims can match by Westernizing

I think it's a good thing that not just Catholics get a nice beneficial mechanic. I'm curious to see how AI Ottomans will fare in the game: in EU3 they were pitiful.
