I don't know about anyone else but I find watching (e.g.) the HRE make England a tributary to be pretty immersion-breaking. I was hoping there would be an option with Patch 2.6 to at least optionally prevent Christians using Make Tributary CB, at least on other Christians (given that it's extremely ahistorical) but since I can't find one I guess I'll have to sort something out myself.

I guess I could play with Horse Lords turned off, would this affect previous saves? This would also prevent pagans, nomads etc forming tributaries (which makes perfect sense and really happened) but for a late game in Western Europe this might not make too much of a difference. Of course it makes me feel a little stupid for buying Horse Lords, for this game it's hard to think of a situation in which improved simulation of the Mongol invasion is worth detracting from the realism of relationships between kingdoms within Europe.

Alternatively - ideally - does anyone know of a mod that restricts use of the Make Tributory CB?

You could simply add

Code:
OR = {
   ROOT = {
    NOT = {
      religion = catholic
    }
   }
   FROM = {
    NOT = {
      religion = catholic
    }
   }
}

inside the "can_use" block for the CB ff you want to disable Catholics from making other Catholics into tributaries. Use "religion_group = christian" if you want to disable it for all Christians, possibly changing the second one to "religion = ROOT" if you want to allow different Christian faiths to make one another into tributaries while still disallowing it if they have the same religion.

However, this would prevent tribals and nomads that go Catholic/Christian from getting Catholic/Christian tributaries as well, so you might want to add a more robust criteria (e.g. adding "is_feudal = yes" inside the same NOT clause) or redefine the CB so that it is possible to use it under certain circumstances while avoiding most strange circumstances (e.g. making the AI extremely unwilling to use the CB against non-MRs if they are feudal).

Thanks, that seemed to work pretty well. I left it at disabling the CB for Christians, realism-wise I'm ok with the idea that Christianising for pagans means losing the ability to openly demand tribute from other Christians, although I haven't played nomad yet and might fix this later if there's some issue I can't see yet.

Out of interest, if I wanted to make the AI less willing to use the CB in some circumstances how would I do that? Thanks in advance.

In the ai_will_do block of the CB you can put various conditions with various weights. I believe the tributary CB already has some weights, but the unmodded version is rather lenient when it comes to which rulers can create tributaries out of which rulers (I have seen emperors somehow become tributaries of counts in the past).
