Is there any reason to use more than one outside train connection?

I've deleted all train connections up to the border and left one that's closest to my industrial connected and so far I can see now downside to it, it lowers the train traffic from outside a lot.
Before passenger tourist trains would clog every line trying to come in from 5 places. Now with one line that actually leaves. My trains line are vastly less clogged. Only a handful of needed trains for freight or the odd passenger train comes in.

So far I can see now downside to it, anyone know of any underlying downsides I might be missing?

I have about 6 freight stations in my current game, 3 passenger ones.
This generated a +++lot of train traffic and clogged up my railways quite a bit. After reworking the system quite a bit, placing alternative railways, improving flux and intersections, the traffic problem has been solved.
Basically one station near every industrial district, one near my freight dock and one near to the highway on the other side. This means freight can take the trains that get them nearer to their destination, this saves a lot of truck traffic going around inside the city itself.
For example, a exporting truck can go to the nearest train station, take the train to the station near the dock, and then export via ship. Or for internal used industry, for example a freight from my oil district takes the train to another general industry district saving quite a bit on road travelled.
One issue with this it seems, it creates a lot of trains going on nearly empty, so not very efficiently. There could line tool for freight train as well that could possibly improve the system a lot. But as long as it doesn't create staggering traffic jams on your rails, having other stations greatly improve road traffic.

Also, I've generally tried to place passenger stations on a separate connection line from cargo trains. They cannot clog each other that way.
