90% of my games are as Italy and 90% of those are with "Italy First".
here's a piece of info that might prove useful if you want to try it.
a possibility of war between Italy and Germany exists in that scenario, and there isn't much you can do to stop it, fyi. if your ally Bulgaria has a civil war, where fascists rebel against your ally Tsar Boris, well guess what. Italy is still allied to Boris, which puts you at war with fascists. If those fascists are backed by Germany, BAM instant war with Germany.
had it happen several times, and makes for an interesting surprise.
I'm trying it as SP France now. France's first ally is Czech. The war started when Germany pushed on Czechoslovakia instead of Poland. Germany immediately went after their Poland focus anyway and brought the Allies in. I was afraid I would be fighting alone.
I was able to push the front line to the Rhine (planning bonus, yeah!), so Germany has maybe five fewer factories to work with. I actually broke through when they declared on Luxembourg and I was able to roll some German units up north of the Mosel river, then cut off a few more at whichever province Trier is in. I encircled maybe 15 units tops but their army crushed Czechoslovakia in the mean time. They are at full strength, otherwise. I lost no units yet.
I quickly took Libya and Sardinia from Italy. Hoping to take Albania and Dodecanese islands soon. Don't know how long I can hold the line at Savoy though. The war started before I could get any forts down there. Italians keep attacking my mountain line, delaying fort construction. (I went all in on my production since I needed lots of guns. I probably should have done one level of forts in early 1938.)
With the Allies showing strength in Poland I'm hoping we can wear them down... There is a stalemate at the Rhine. I almost didn't give engineers to my units due to pre-war combat experience limits but I got them equipped just in time. River and entrenchment bonuses seem to be helping hold the line there.
I need to get across the Rhine somehow or relieve the Savoy line with a naval invasion of Italy, something. Can't really build more troops though. I have just enough production to keep my existing army fully equipped! (Especially with 1939 level stuff coming online soon.)
I'll keep you posted.
