Is there any reason to go with the own faction as France/Italy/Japan?

What are the benefits of an own faction, compared to go with the existing democratic or fascist one?

There might be reason why sometimes Germany wouldn't let Japan or Italy in his faction. But i don't see any reason why they'd go their own ways voluntarily.

Italy, to rebuild the Roman Empire without being tied to the Germans.
Japan, to build their East Asian Empire, er , Co-Prosperity Sphere for Asians only.

Doing so allows each to not be tied to what Germany is coded to do, and can buy them time to fight battles of their own choosing. And it allows a little "what if" alternative history.

Remember that both nations were Germany's enemy 20 years earlier, and that until Munich Mussolini was against Hitler. Japan has been England's staunch ally for years until the US pushed the UK to break the alliance. It was the Allies not backing Italy's Ethiopian land grab and Japan's Chinese land grab that pushed them both towards Germany to some extent. After all, they were doing nothing different than the Brits and French had done 40 - 50 years earlier to "backwards" lands. They just had the bad grace to do it after France and England had moved to a more civilized and nuanced foreign policy.

I understand and agree that real life Italy could have good reason to maintain more distance from Germany. Also i'd argue that real life Japan wasn't in a "faction" (close alliance) with Germany according to game terms. Afaik they did not have much military cooperation.

I mean that in the game there's not much reason why not to join Germany as Italy/Japan or Britain as France. The only two reasons i can think of is ego (this is my own empire!) and as CharlieFox has pointed well out, the possibility to turn against the main ideology faction at one point.

Since the Axis in the great majority of cases fight offensive wars which are voluntary, Italy and Japan are allowed to keep out of them most of the time if they wish. For this reason there's not much reason to go the own way. And Italy is highly likely to face the Allies at some point where a German alliance is useful. Also the same can be told of Japan, although not with as obvious gains from the faction like with Italy. It can still be useful even for Japan though like when Axis is doing well Japan can send his airforce to help in getting superiority over England or the Channel to help in a sealion or airborne assault of England. France will almost surely be assaulted by the Axis at one point so a British backing is vital, let alone the case when France is going to dethrone Britain sometime.

In single player I would recommend going with the Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere over joining the Axis as Japan. It allows you to do everything you would as part of the Axis, except you aren't shackling yourself to the corpse that is the German and Italian AI.

Yes out of the three Japan has the most reason to go alone.

I see significant advantages and disadvantages to Japan creating their own faction, especially if you want an historical campaign.

First, your friends in Europe will be much less likely to send units to Asia to help you. It is almost always a mistake for them to do so.

Second it allows you to have a NAP with the Soviets while pushing south. This is unfortunately a two edged sword since when you do declare against he Allies some of their smaller members may not be called in and those include some of your targets. If you were instead in the Axis and simply delayed your entry into the war, you would get to be at war with all of them at once.

90% of my games are as Italy and 90% of those are with "Italy First".

here's a piece of info that might prove useful if you want to try it.

a possibility of war between Italy and Germany exists in that scenario, and there isn't much you can do to stop it, fyi. if your ally Bulgaria has a civil war, where fascists rebel against your ally Tsar Boris, well guess what. Italy is still allied to Boris, which puts you at war with fascists. If those fascists are backed by Germany, BAM instant war with Germany.

had it happen several times, and makes for an interesting surprise.

It can be amusing. Although normally if both Germany and Italy are controlled by experienced players i think Italy won't stand much chance :)

Italy won't stand much chance :)

last time it happened, Germany got steam rolled. they were in the midst of war with Soviets, and had no troops on Italian border whatsoever. but, that was an AI game too.

tbh, I'd be shocked if a human player as Germany can take on Italy and Soviet Union at once with absolutely NO preparation time. especially against a naturally paranoid player such as myself, who usually keeps troops in northern Italy simply as a matter of policy.

AI obviously can't play Germany. It is good for Nicaragua and Bhutan :)
