When playing as smaller countries like Croatia or duchies I've noticed it's a whole lot harder to recruit troops for my army. Making it a real challenge to go up against Hungary or HRE. When Hungary declared war on me to press a claim on one of my border provinces I couldn't win since I had only 1500 men at the time of my new king vs their 2500-strong invasion force. Is there a way to speed up recruitment of troops or is sending the marshal to the map the only way?

You could try saving up your money and hiring mercenaries. They're alot more powerful for a tiny duchy to deploy than trying to levy militia. You can then dismiss them once your battle's over if you don't want to continue paying their monthly fee.
