I like to test certain scenarios in my games to see what strategies work and what don't. It occured to me that it would make my job a lot easier if I could figure out how to edit a save game file.

Does anyone know of any guides out there or threads where it talks about editing save game files? In particular I want to know if it is possible to change the ownership of a certain province or give a bunch of techs to another country.

It's a plain text file, open it with notepad and edit as needed. Save as plain text of course. It's pretty straighforward, each country has sections listing techlevels, techapps and provinces (national, owned, controlled).

The techs are tricky though. Just adding techs to the list does not give them to the country; it just means they can no longer research it and can research other techs that require it. The effects of the tech are applied in other places: modifiers, upgrade, models, and various individual variables such as supply_modifier or research_cost_app. Probably the best way to apply techs is to add them to the research queue for the country (usually just below the list of deactivated techs) with a completion date one day in the future. This is also a bit tricky since you need to pick a free ID for the object; I believe the line(s) immediately below the selectable country list point to the next available ID (or the last used) for their types so you could use the next highest ID for type 4712 and then increment this number.

Thank you for your help.

Could someone tell me if there is a list of the provinces in HOI and their corresponding numerical value in the save game file?

NO! the list of provinces is not in the save game file [scenarios\save games\save-game-name.eug]

the list of provinces is in the db folder with the name of province.csv. this file is also a plain text file which should be opened with notepad. the easiest way to find the province you want is to so a search (^F) for the name of the province. just be sure that you spell the province name correctly. :D btw, you can change the name of the province in this file and it will be displayed in the game everywhere EXCEPT on the map (hard coded.) FYI, any changes to this file will be reflected in the game the next time you load a country or "save."

WARNING: be sure to back up any file you plan on changing BEFORE you make any changes to it! AFTER may be too LATE.

yes, in the game push F12 and write showid, than enter and in the left corner down the screen the id-number of the province is shown, where your mouse is.

in the savefile search for id = ??? (number of the province you want to edit and there you can change some as antiair, landfort and so on,
