Is there any downside of mines to myself

I play man the guns now for the first time and as Germany. Is there any downside for myself to mine my coastline? As i read the tooltip it only effects the enemy. But since a mine is a mine regardless who laid it i am unsure how it works ingame, does my mines in the english cannel affect my fleet moving through or can they sink my ships or hamper my own invasions?

I have a bunch of old subs i could use for it.

Nope, no downside. Except needing time and ships/fuel.

If you right click on the mine icon, you'll get a report, telling you how many mines have been laid, and how much damage they've done to date. As for the "Do You Mined" achievement, it seems to ignore any coastlines that are not original - meaning the coasts of France, post-conquest, do not count for mining against Germany. But it doesn't take a big investment. I had 12 submarines partially fitted for mining, also able to mine through their regular tubes, that managed to get some 500+ mines in two sea zones off Japan within a half year of war. The surface minlayers, however, did not last long, so I do not recomment investing in surface minelayers.

I'm not certain the AI bothers with mines. Does anyone know for certain?

The only downside is that in vanilla, you can hamstring the AI in less than a year by mining crucial sea regions. And I don't think the AI is very good about sweeping.

One major downside is that it lags the game. It wont be significant if you just mine a few sea zones, but if you go overzealous on the mining then it can affect performance in the late game

Ha, like you would notice if everyone and their mum is on extensive conscription and producing their behinds off !
