is there a way to fix the extreme lag on late game battles?

I reach to a point where I fractured every large empire i can find, as I play the Evil America Democracy haha
I break and break each large empire till I'm the only biggest empire in the east.

but the lag in battle is so crap the movement of the ship stutters,
they move so slow that I took a bath and they still haven't finish fighting =_= damn it

any suggestion to fix that lag?
