Is the only way as National China to control the Warlords is to pick ''Subjuguate the Warlords'' ?

Still means it's impossible...
Not at all. It's completely doable. I've done it a few times already myself. In fact, I'm at the point of trying to find a better and more effective way because I want to post a small guide on the wiki :).

Generally, the strategy is to try and stack as many bonuses as you can while reforming your army. I was able to hold off Japan with just two armies of 20 width divisions. You start pushing them back once you get an air force and an armored force to attack with.

EDIT: wanted to say a bit more

Put all your starting factories on basic weapons. It is better to have an army equipped with basic weapons than an army that isn't equipped at all.
Your first focus should be the military one; your first political appointment should be a military advisor. Together, you will get a passive 0.1 Military experience per day. After 200 days, you have enough experience to make a 10 infantry militia division. These will guard your ports and your fronts early on.

After this, your new military factories should go to Arty, Support Equipment, and Motorized. Start turning some of your militias into regular infantry divisions with arty, engineers, and field medics. If you have been diligent in defending your borders, you may even be able to push Japan back at this moment.

No, I know how to win as China, it's easy, but I was asking if it would be possible to do historical united front while annexing the warlords because I didn't want to be at war with many warlords with a Japanese player (I've won in singleplayer many times but I'm looking for a multiplayer strategy that gets me the warlords.

Oh. Whoops.

Yeah, not sure how that would work out in MP. I doubt the Chinese warlords are going to be played a lot in regular MP games. The warlords provide nescessary micro, but I'm not sure it's super important.

At best you may just see Guangxi Clique players.

So it's impossible to go historical...
I'm not sure what you mean by "going historical".

You have several options:

  • You can subjugate the warlords and integrate them slowly with political power.
  • You can form the United Front against Japan, win, and then kick them out of the faction and crush them.
  • You can do things the historical way, where you form the United Front, sit around with half your country occupied for seven years, take everything back after the US defeats Japan, and then promptly lose to Mao.
If you're doing somewhat serious MP, you should form the United Front and worry about what to do about the warlords if and when you defeat Japan. It may still be too early to tell, but it seems to me that when both Japan and China are piloted by humans, China is the clear favorite if they form the Front. For best balance, I'd recommend a third human piloting Manchukuo on the Obedience path (it's pretty strong actually).

Funnily enough, I was hardly aware I could even do any of these things and just brute-forced them by justifying war and invading them one by one :p .

Which may not have been the best option since Communist China joined the Comintern when I invaded them, which caused a war with the USSR ;) .

Given enough Communist China stabs you in the back. I like to train up a third army for that eventuality.

Or you can just solve the problem effortlessly. Mass the entire army and storm Communist China. it's not going to be pretty (but it will be extremely economical considering the firepower of communist divisions)

it's even a great teaching school for learning Engineer, Trickster or Hill Fighter with one of your generals.
