It's interesting to note that the Bismarck-class battleships were too big to pass through the canal. Should that be a factor in its use, I wonder.
HoI IV doesnt make a difference in sice of ships. It only differentiates between surface vessels and submarines.

Just a quick question, is the Kiel canal in HOI4 ?

Yes, channels and straits are in the game. If you controll those, the enemies surface vessels wont be able to pass them like gibraltar for example. As for channels from what i have seen submarines cant pass them aswell. Sadly i cant remember in which exact video they showed off the channel/strait system, but i wont watch through 15 hours worth of videos for that.

How can you tell?
You can just make out the two circular strait/canal icons for Kiel and the straits in Denmark.
As for channels from what i have seen submarines cant pass them aswell.

It depends on the rules for the canal/strait. But generally straits are OK - subs can pass through submerged, though it doesn't prevent them being detected and attacked. But the canals are too shallow for subs to be submerged. See here where subs can't sneak through the Panama Canal:
BD1kVlG.jpg

Notice also that even though you have a neutral stance with the controller (USA) your transport convoys and warships can't pass through Panama. Suez on the other hand should remain fully open for neutral shipping, because of it's different treaty obligations, so Italy has no problems during the Ethiopia War, and is only blocked once it DoWs the Allies. The controller (UK) can only block shipping for countries it is directly at war with.

IIRC Turkey's treaties would block their straits to all shipping, even trade, belonging to belligerent countries, even when Turkey is not at war.

No, afaik Bismack passed it 3 times. (16./17.9.1940, 7.12.1940 und am 7.3.1941)

But it was planned to make it even bigger for new planned ships with Z-Plan.

I suppose it's at the top of the canals allowance then. I was under the impression that it was too long for the whole thing, but I see it made it!

Nice find on those pictures!

IIRC they had to remove alot of excess weight, including the shells, to prevent it hitting the bottom. Must have been a risky operation to do it during war time.

Due to vulnerability considerations ? I'd say not that much : Adolf Galland (in charcge of the air protection) explains that most of the danger when escaping the Gneisenau and the Sharnhorst in '42 february (Cerberus operation), was of course in the Manche. But then, a decisive british air attack would have been prevented early, so almost impossible.

Sheesh, if the Luftwaffe aren't able to cover Kiel, the the submarines can't provide some screening of the area, and mines can't slow down the British, you might as well throw in the towel and surrender. What's the point of invading Denmark if I can't transit ships through the canal without risk of attack?

:) Yeah, pre-Barbarossa they still had plenty of defensive air cover available, and the RAF had still not perfected precision bombing. Took them a few goes at Tirpitz before they got it right.

In the game, of course you teleport from the Baltic to the North Sea. You can't be attacked while in transit through a canal.

I'm sure you couldn't be attacked in the Kiel Canal when it was added in an expansion of HOI3. There was no sea zone, you were in the Baltic, then you were in the North Sea, you were never stationary within Germany. Nothing to stop you being attacked in the seas on either side ofc.
