Is the BJ-1 the only starter mech you can get in the campaign?

Yup, you could put in an atlas for the starter mech, but would you really want to? In the early game, you're going to be missing a lot of shots since the pilots aren't going to be very accurate. Then repairs are going to cost you more than you're going to make on any of the early missions. You're going to go broke fast that way. I'd be tempted to put in a T-bolt as the starter mech, but that would make it all too easy in the early game, as I'd probably take a lot less internal damage, and be able to more quickly finish off the opfor. But again that feels like cheating (which it basically is), and I'd rather be forced to learn the hard way to better my tactical game so later on I'm a tactical genius on the level of Mitch. ....no wait, I'd rather actually win some missions now and again. A tactical genius on the level of Eck.

So long as you don't get AJs luck.

But with how that first mission is scripted to use JJ wouldn't the starter mech have to be one with JJ thus not allowing the cent, hunchi, and kintaro unless you start with a modified one.

Oh good point, I wonder how that would work. Probably be a game breaking thing. I might try it sometime just to see how the game would handle it. Modding in a starter mech that doesn't have any JJs I mean. Unintended consequences and all that just for the lulz.

Same thing, just the "Royal Guard" is what they call the unit you wind up in at the start. Not SLDF Royal Guard, that's . . . that's something else.

A mod I could envision, though (sadly) not mod myself, would be one that gave you a choice of mechs depending upon the house you select, with a significant variety in the choices available, including weight choices. The weight could go as high as maybe an 80 ton Victor as a starting mech! There would however be a significant balancing factor.

The starting 'lance' you get once you are in the first mission with your leopard born merc friends is dependant on the size of your starting mech. For every ton over and above the default 45 ton Blackjack your choice gave you, two tons is removed from the tonnage of your starter lance. If you selected say Steiner for an 80 ton assault starter mech, your compatriots would all be piloting locusts!

Whether it should work the other way is not so obvious. Would taking a Jenner for a starting mech warrant replacing the Spider with an Enforcer?

After my first playthrough, I might mod it to use like a Grasshopper or something for the starter, if only to have a mech that'll be MINE and have the emotional impact for a large chunk of the game instead of only as long as it takes to get an ok Heavy option. Family Mech, needs to have some staying power!

I want interesting, not ridiculous. ;) And even that open to debate until I've played through the main story once.

I would be happy to play a campaign in which I started with a Marauder with an XL engine, and NO other mechs with which to equip my other pilots. In the longer game, it would still be a cheat, but it would not necessarily be a cakewalk in the earlier parts of the game. And by the time you are into the later parts of the game, I am not sure that it would be all that imbalancing.

I expect we will see several options for starter mechs with mods, fairly quickly. I would not be at all surprised to see a few mods similar to the OP ones I have mentioned.
