Is the BJ-1 the only starter mech you can get in the campaign?

Is anyone aware if there are any other options available except the BJ-1. Never was a fan of those so i was wondering if any of the other backgrounds you take have any influence on what mech you get?

At the moment, starting mech and lance appear to be fixed and part of the story itself.

Without giving anything away, however, in all the streams I have seen, the BJ-1 has been kicking butt left and right. I especially like a custom job someone did w/ no JJ's, 2 AC/5's and 2 ML's.

EDIT: However, I wouldn't be surprised if w/n 30-45 seconds of release, one of our fine comrades finds a way around that. :)

So far they have said that the Blackjack BJ-1 is your starter mech no matter what your choices in making your character.

A few of us would like to have a pool of starter mechs like the Vindicator 45t, Hunchback 50t, centurion 50t, Trebuchet 50t, Griffin 55t, Kintaro 55t, Shadow Hawk 55t, just to list a small group that could fit with the Blackjack.

i was hoping for something like that or thatr different background choicec result in different mechs. But in the end it doesn't matter too much

Yes, but it is easy to mod, unless they've changed something.

I actually think the starting lance is more troublesome. While I like several of them individually, as a lance they really lack capabilities. Nothing to teach you about really using missiles as both types are really minimized, and nothing at all to teach newbies that light mechs are NOT just for running up and yelling 'pew-pew.' And consequently teach them that light mechs aren't just something to sell for cash at the first opportunity.

The repairs on lights that I've seen so far are an economic lesson- they'll cost new players money they can't afford in the early game.

If i remember right there was a line in a json file with the player starting mech and starting lance. It should be possible to change that when we get the game.

yeah this was my sentiment as well. the starting lance is very lackluster in its performance, but this is 3025-era so i suppose lackluster is the theme of the day. the lights will burn many players wallets in the beginning that's for sure. Is swapping the BJ just a mod of some xml file or something?

**edit**

got an answer that it was in json, thanks for that

You can change the JSON files which are text files quite easily. And in one of them there is a list of your starting lance.

And I know someone will edit it, to give themselves 5 Atlases just for the fun.

There seemed to be a lack of UrbanMechs in the early missions. Don't remember to have seen any in the streams. That's sad, would like to get my hands on one instead of the Locust or Spider without modding it in.

Change a line in a text file, actually.

It isn't a lackluster thing. Except for the heaviest mech, they're all excellent at what they do (and there are benefits to the other as well) It's just that the lights have near identical roles and similar loadouts, and there is a heavy skew to stand and shoot, which is a bad thing to teach.

It really needs a short range striker to emphasize maneuver and another mech to suggest taking advantage of things like sensor lock and indirect fire.

That the starting random missions are beyond easy also fails to emphasize the importance of evasion and cover.

You're stuck with the starting lance for probably at least three missions (minimum, likely more), and it's the time to be emphasizing the basic skills. The tutorial mission sort of covers the very basics, but there's so much going on in the real intro mission that it's easy for those to be lost.

I'm not sure how many base assaults we have seen. I think Urbies will be more frequent as base defenders. Also We've only seen low difficulty missions. And despite it's humble appearance the Urbie with his AC/10 can and will ruin a lot of new players days.
