I just started a game as Austria (DW) in normal difficulty, with Lucky Nations set to random. A few years into the game and I get the message that England has declared war on Scotland without a CB. I checked England's mission and it was to vassalize Scotland. And yes, they had the Subjugation CB. Why did they not use it and suffer a stab hit? I am pretty sure I have seen other AIs do the same thing in other games - wage a war without a CB when they DO have a good CB.

The AI isn't dumb, the AI is very smart.
In reality they just want life peacefully.
So they make ''stupid'' decisions so the players gets annoyed and wreaks havoc on the forums.
While you have been away from EU3, Charles Aragon VII is enjoying his cup of tea.
The AI amazes me sometimes.

france had 5 cores on burgundy, but they ignored the reconquest CB and used excommunication CB instead. when they had 100% warscore they force-released 8 province flanders, which now has their 5 cores. a few months later, they annexed holland for 8 BB without a land connection to their capital. just when i thought i had seen it all, they stole istria from naples, even though their 5 boat navy has no hope of protecting it, for 4 BB.

Trust me after playing the game for 3 years now i can tell you that the AI is smart wise when getting things done, but not when doing decisions as they their actions are based on relationships not on common sense, so yepp :).

Yeah, it is very dumb. Some folks carved Cornwall out of England in a previous war and then England declared on it with no CB instead of using the Reconquest CB. In the end, Cornwall was annexed with 8 BB, which is totally dumb. The A.I. really need to be taught how to link its objectives with CB's.

Oh and yeah, I once got curious about what my nation would do in the hands on the A.I. So, I logged into a save game as another country. The very next day - my country DoWed on a weaker country it has military access to and took a -5 stability hit (rather than removing the access first...). What a retard.

One thing I find to be quite lame is that the A.I. can be easily abused using the alliance system. In the current game, Burgundy's the predominant military power in the world and I allied him in a war against some African tribe. The very next day, I DoWed on one of its vassals with the Purge Heresy CB and took a sizable chunk of its territories out. Burgundy couldn't do a single thing because the game mechanics prevented it from declaring war on a country which it is allied to in a war and I suppose it probably couldn't white peace that African tribe soon enough (if even tried to do that). I pulled the same trick numerous times to circumvent other guarantees and alliances. This really needs to be changed.

The most stupid country AI must go to England and their random wars with the Irish minors when they DON´T have the Conquest Mission. -3 stability (or at least -2) up to three times not to mention getting uncored provinces with a very high Revolt Risk. Also when it comes to the Vassalize Scotland Mission the biggest issue is that England seems reluctant to attack at all (perhaps that is really wisdom though considering how unwilling the Scots are to submit to English rule).

Another way to Pervert the Course of alliances is to declare war on someone small, say Savoy, so HRE leader Bohemia leaps to their defence. Crush Savoy so you can make peace with Savoy whenever you like, but go & declare war on anyone you fancy in the HRE meanwhile - since Bohemia can only be at war with you once, they can't defend the others. I suppose if Bohemia becomes the leader of the war with Savoy you're in the mire though.

Even Castille, at times, can be quite stupid about the CBs. I have seen her DOW Aragon with no CB when they themselves had excommunicated them only the month before.

So, in almost every game of mine, France annexes Brittany. Usually they just take their province in any war they find themselves in, but there are times when they just go for Brittany without any CB. I can understand why the France AI is coded to go for Brittany, but shouldn't they at least manufacture a CB like how we do it? I have never seen an AI forge documents and go to war with them.

if you use the obscure documents CB the war leader cant change-possibly its the same with the claim throne CB?

I know, sometimes I feel like the game has this massive fun toolbox put at our disposal but the AI could only be trained to use the giant hammer that is in it, which sort of sucks when you need to do precision work. And when they DO use the precision tools, its at the wrong time (i.e. England DOWing a OPM HRE member in the middle of Germany with Excommunication CB but having no way to reach it).

I don't know how it is now, but there was a time where you couldn't get the land of a Subjugation CB because it was worth more than 100% points

Simon, that sounds right ... it was actually the Restoration of Personal Union CB I'm using against Savoy (had a PU before, lost it due to untimely heir death). The name of the war is English-Saoyard Unification War - which is exactly the same name you get with a Fab Claims war.

I'd like to write a bug report on this behaviour, but the descriptions here are not very precise. Can we get a good summary of the behaviours and situations, and preferably illustrative save games too? Thanks.

If you want, I'll crank up a game as FRA (or Cyprus to stay out of the way) and pay attention to the declared wars while checking for existing non-used CB's. I find that once an AI nation gets beaten once, everyone and their mother likes to DoW with no CB, but I'll admit I've never checked to see if they have spare CB's. Could be the CB doesn't give a bonus to what they want (i.e they want land but only have "Trade Dispute" CB). Would be nice if the declared wars felt like they had a purpose outside of "Because I can". RE: Subjugation CB, it expires after 10 years or so I believe, even though the mission remains.
