I actually thought the the same thing when I found out about the mechanics of Stellaris. It may not be in the same "genre" as Sword of the Stars is in as sense (turn-based with real-time combat vs. real-time w/ pause), but the wildly different FTL mechanics included reminded me a lot of SotS.
Honestly, my initial thought was that Stellaris was going to be the game Sword of the Stars 2 attempted but failed to be (a game about empires that have gotten more entrenched and actual diplomacy has risen over the gunboat variant so common in games).

I meant to say does Stellaris have firing arcs, my bad.

I don't think so. Going by the Blorg livestreams, the ship editor hasn't shown any kind of arcs, at least not visually. It does make sense, seeing how abstracted Paradox Grand Strategy combat generally is.

I don't see many similarities between Stellaris and SotS that are not common 4x features except that they both have several different drive mechanics at the same time.

Ship design are not really very similar and combat mechanics are way different. Ship design in Stellaris is allot more abstracted. SotS are basically a tactical game with a rudimentary strategy layer tacked on, that game is all about tactical combat. SotS 2 tried to be a bit more but still were more about tactical combat than strategy in my opinion.

SotS and Stellaris feel like two very different games all together and are no more similar than any other 4x game.

The closest game to Stellaris seem to be Distant World with similar game mechanics and scope.

I still have to say that the game Stellaris is closest to is Distant Worlds. IMO Distant Worlds has a lot of flaws (and I wouldn't recommend it as a game), but I still think it's done more to innovate in the 4X genre than pretty much any other game since MoO. What Stellaris is doing is taking the lessons learned from Distant Worlds and making them into a game that is actually playable.
I agree strongly with this...but for me, DW was really fascinating and enjoyable as a 4x game until the mid-late game mark where I felt pacing went out the window and my computer went into meltdown with all the processes that were going on simultaneously.
