I've been starting a couple of Ironman games over and over as Serbia to get my start right and in about four separate games out of ten I've had the following notifications. -

"___ ___ Hapsburg has risen to the throne in Hungary"
Same day / day after
"Regency Council in Hungary"

The ruler is literally dying as soon as he takes the throne, as far as i'm aware there are no events that kill a specific ruler so often and, being so often it just doesn't strike me as coincidence. Am I missing something?

I think it has to do with the [Battle of Varna] that takes place a day before the start of EUIV 1444 start.

I've never played as Hungary at the start, so I don't know if insta-kills the king at the beginning of the game and then instigates a regency council, the game starts as a regency council, or if it's a weird tick over from the history files saying the previous King died the day before.

I'm just coming up to 1460 and the times it's happened it's been between then and the past ten years, they've had different rulers after start as well as regencies, but the second a Hapsburg (and seemingly only a Hapsburg) gets his hands on the throne the game seems to insta-kill him. I can't make sense of it.

Ah, yeah. I've just checked the event files. It's an event Hungary gets to elect a king who isn't a Hapsburg.

The heir is born in 1443, and the event can trigger in 1450, so he can be elected but be too young to take the throne. The event kills the previous monarch.

The king of Hungary is a Habsburg. There is a decision at first to see if Janos will act as the regent or not....

As for Ladislaus Posthumous, he died in 1458. Even if this is a case of RNG, it's completely historical RNG. Hungary then went to Janos' younger son, Matthias Corvinus.

Gotcha', explains why they're losing so many Regencies then in such a short space of time. Was bothering me as I knew I was missing something, thanks!

It's a combination of 2 events.

Hungary gets an early event that puts Janos Hunyadi as Regent, with Ladislaus Postmus von Habsburg as a 5-ish year old heir. Or just creates the 5-year old heir. The AI is more likely to pick the first option.

Then Hungary gets another event between 1450 and 1457 if they don't have an heir and don't have a regency, and their dynasty is von Habsburg that will kill the ruler and puts Matyas Hunyadi as heir. Or forces Hungary into a PU under a random country with the von Habsburg dynasty. The AI is more likely to pick the first option.

So what's happening is that Hungary is getting a Habsburg heir with the first event. The ruler dies and Ladislaus Postmus comes of age with no heir. And then the 2nd event triggers (it's only 1 month MTTH so it'll trigger quickly), killing the ruler.

Mayas Hunyadi (4/5/5) just took the throne so, yeah this is exactly what's happening.
