Is my FPS abysmal or is this expected?

I usually am hovering at 20-40 FPS in this game, despite me being able to run much more resource-intensive games (such as Doom Eternal) at 60 FPS stable. Is there something extremely wrong with my setup, or is this typical? I know it seems like a minor thing, but it hurts my enjoyment of the game a fair bit when the framerate is so unstable.

Vega 56 8 GB
Ryzen 7 1700
MSI B350 Tomahawk MOBO
3000 MHz 2 x 8 GB RAM, XMP enabled

My fps drops by a lot as well when I get to the 1600-1700's. Nothing can be done I assume, because my computer can handle Cyberpunk 2077 in ultra graphism, and I'm confident this game requires more than EU4

Well that's disappointing and reassuring in equal measure.

I can't even keep a consistent 60 from 1444, but I'm glad it's not just me.

I also get lag in late game, but usually I am stable 144 Fps at game start. Are you running speed 5? Speed 5 will always use the maximum resources possible and creates lag

It feels like performance degrades noticeably if the game is running for some time. Also cant get to 60 fps even when the game is paused after a couple of hours. Restart solves this. Might be the issue with my mod setup, but I think vanilla have this problem too.

Doom Eternal vs Europa Universalis 4. Fps is vital in a map painting game like this...
It actually is for me and I presume many other people because monitors that use G-Sync or Freesync technology have a minimum framerate below which they experience issues. Any game that maintains a framerate anywhere between 60-144 FPS is fine for me but if I continually oscillate between 30 and 60 FPS the display flickers. Because of this I have to disable Freesync in my monitor settings whenever playing EU4. Meanwhile Doom Eternal does look excellent and maintains 144 FPS almost rock solid.

It looks like this but happening during gameplay, and becomes incredibly distracting. Imagine the brightness of every country just flickering slightly whenever you are moving the camera.

If you play on speed 5, your game will necessarily lag and stutter.
Speed 5 is as 'fast as your pc can handle', so your fps will always be low/unstable. Faster pc's will just process ingame-time faster.

1st gen ryzen's have pretty weak cores, and since EU4 runs on single core, you are going to suffer.

Howdy all,

Speed 5 lags to like 5-10 FPS, which is essentially what I expect. Speed 4 during wars lags to like 20-40 FPS. I can keep a solid 60 as long as the game is paused.

Displaying the game state is different from simulating game days. If the game was coded properly then the process of outputting frames would be done outside the primary thread (which is what limits the game speed) where the CPU cores with unused CPU time and the GPU would be able to output 100s if not 1000s of FPS regardless of game speed.
