You can try Leviathans for at least a campaign. The guardians give you something to do mid game and the war in heaven is a good challenge.

I've been hooked on stellaris lately, but I use lots of mods too. Also, play the way you want, that's fun for you. Tons of mods on steam that can fix stuff up with combat and ship types and loadouts, even ship behavior in combat. It can make things really interesting.

I've got mods that make missiles worth it and quite dangerous, improve strike craft and make them more dangerous, and also boost research since starting from the beginning really sucks when what I really wanna do is get into fleets composed of the heavier ships w/ better weapons.

Verified the game files, and there was a bug there. After reinstalling, no CTDs at all.

Gave it another run through. It's definitely improved, but there's still a way to go. It badly needs an actual economy as well as fleshing out the diplomacy. Reminded me why I stopped playing initially. It's fun getting started, then you get to a point where you are just staring at the screen waiting to build up minerals to rebuild/expand your fleet between the micromanagement hell of each war.

I'll give it another whirl when banks comes out, but realistically I think it will be another two expansions after that when it hits it's stride. 2018?

If you don't like the initial release of this game, I really have my doubts that you will ever like it. Patches and DLCs will only ever do so much to change the basic parameters of the game.

Luckily I love the game. I just don't have enough time in my life for gaming as much as I would like to.

If you didn't find it fun before Utopia, you probably won't find it fun after.
I like it as it is, and I'm really looking forward to Utopia, but I don't think it'll make Stellaris strategically deeper as it doesn't address some big problems with wars and combat.
However, it does make some of the current game mechanics better and adds a lot of new roleplaying avenues.
Essentially I would only recommend this to people who already like the game.
