Is it worth modernizing as the Byzantines?

I haven't played many eastern tech games. Right now its about 1450, and my Ottoman recruited troops are decimating most of my foes.

I've got all of Greece and Turkey under my control, and I'm about to start getting missions to invade Italy, etc.

Is it worth Westernizing? Not sure it's worth the headache, but then again I'll eventually fall behind in tech...

Indeed, eventually you will fall behind (well, probably). And even if you keep up, by the 20s or so Western Tech Units start to easily surpass their Eastern counterparts.

You can probably keep harassing the non-Europeans all you want as Byzantium, but if you want to hang with the western powers eventually you'll probably have to bite the bullet and westernize.

more than falling behind in tech (which isn't such a big deal really), you want to westernize so you can modernize your army: being in Oriental tech group, your unit are really crappy... they are on par with muslims units, but against ottomans unit or even worse, latin units, you're dead meat.

The west never helped you, so show them that you didn't need them anyway by not westernizing!! And you will be betraying your values! Do not give up your values for the those... LATINS

in short, do not westernize you will be just fine if you play well, and... have larger armies than the enemy

I tried very, very hard to not westernize as Romania. In the end, I needed every leg up I could get against Trollhemia and Milan (who as a blobbing HRE).
