The biggest factor to the original question is, what's your innovation vs. narrowminded when the reforms begin?

If you're terribly innovative, it's hard to produce missionaries at all, so if your provinces start flipping on their own you might want to just convert to the largest group, or take tolerance measures.

Prods are taxers and Reformed are traders - so Reformed would be the better choice for a naval country.

1. An AI country will convert if its capital province converts.
2. It could have been annexed by a nation which was then forced to release the Papal States as an independent nation by a Protestant nation in peace negotiations

So the general consensus seems to be:

Catholic = Colonial power; useful for Portugal, Spain, England e.t.c

Protestant = Blob; useful for France, Austria, Ottomans e.t.c

Reformed = Everybody else, especially trading nations; useful for Venice, Netherlands e.t.c

Just remember if you're going to create an innovative empire, by the time the reformation happens, you might not have much choice in your religion, or you may be forced to select tolerance choices (don't make early religious choices before you know where you want to take your country)

And never introduce Jizya, that's stoopid.

Really? How is that possible?

Religious rebels seizing Rome, causing the Papal States to collapse, and reforming under the new religion would be my guess. Heretic/Religious rebels have a flag set that won't allow them to enforce their demands upon the Papal States, but I don't think the country collapsing code takes that into consideration, causing the religion change upon collapse.

6% tax increase vs. 20% additional stability cost? Were you planning on losing your stability every third year to think it a bad idea?

stability cost % modifiers are additive. If you're a conquerer going over the infamy limit, your stab cost is going to go through the roof anyway, so Jizya is worth it.

Catholic: useful for Iberia and Italy, since your provinces will have a hard time converting via event anyway. Iberians are generally colonizers anyway.

Protestant: England, Scandanavia, and Germany are more likely to convert by event, useful for continental empires and small nations once the reformation hits.

Reformed: Trading nations and small (at reformation) colonizers.

Ottomans aren't going Protestant. :p

Oh, you silly

Once, the Byzantine empire revolted as an Orthodox country with Papacy as it's government. It was kind of cool, seeing the Orthodox pope at odds with his catholic counterpart.

Wait...what? The only way a nation can gain the Papacy government is either through being the Papal States...or being forced-released by the Papal States (when Nation A force-release Nation B, Nation B adopts the same government as Nation A). I have never seen a revolter nation choose the Papacy government.

It's not unheard of. Due to the weird way defections work, it's possible to get all sorts of combinations. I'm sure there are probably more than a few "XXX is the Papacy" screens in the strange-screenshot thread.

I probably should have mentioned that I've never gone over the infamy limit in 800 hours of gameplay

And yeah, stability is a pain in the ass playing large Islamic nations

I think somebody already answered this in this thread, but does Deus Vult prevent the "Minorities Flock..." event? Isn't there another way to prevent it that doesn't require changing NIs?

I don't think any idea can stop the event, but if you are either neutral on innovative/narrowminded or at least slightly innovative, can't remember, you won't get the event.

I want to say it's driven primarily by being Narrowminded.

Easy way to stop it is to stamp out the heretics. ;)
