Is it still possible for Hungary to join the HRE?

In version 1.23 I would like to start a new game as Hungary and like in earlier version 1.12 I want to join the HRE, again.
Is it still possible? Any experience with the latest patch and Hungary?

If you release someone and give them some of your cores but I don't know if that's ideal. Probably better to install an union over Austria and become Emperor if you wanna go that route.

If you are the Emperor you can add your own provinces to the HRE at will, provided you have a province adjacent to an HRE province. Becoming the emperor in the first place is the problem since you have some distance between yourself and the electors, and Bohemia might rival you. All sorts of weird things can happen during the religious league so that might be your best shot.

1. Convert provinces to Austrian culture until you can culture shift.
2. Make sure you are under 200 development.
3. Max out relations with Austria.
4. Give up your crown and become a HRE prince.
5. Bear the shame of being emperor's sidekick.

You can join the empire right at the start if you max out relations with Austria while returning some provinces to Transylvania (or anyone else, but Transylvania seems to be the best option). There is no need to culture shift. As Hungary start with a regency anyway and only have to give away a bit of land in order to join the HRE, you don't even lose a lot. So yes, definitely possible.

Returning provinces to Transilvania, make sure they do not border anyone except you. So you can conquer them back asap.

1. Get Hunyadi
2. Ally France and Venice or Poland
3. Unify Austrian, Greek and Turkish culture. You know what I mean

EDIT: If you somehow manage to join the HRE, your rank will be lowered to that of a Dutchy. Unacceptable.

I don't know if it was fixed in 1.23, but it didn't happen in 1.22

It won't happen. People are just scared because the tooltip "you will get demoted to a Duchy" is still there
