I was among the super loyal bunch who ran out and bought Hearts of Iron the same day it was published ... however I had forgotten about Paradox love of publishing betas ... This has resulted in me playing the game for a few days and I haven't touched it since ... a bit of a waste of money

So my question is, I can see Victoria has a 1,02 patch out now - should I buy it now or is it still unplayable? (I am assuming that Paradox hasn't learned a thing and has published a (pre)beta once again). - I just don't wanna throw away good money once more ...

Is it playable? Yes. Is it finished? No. There are some irritating bugs and some strange design decisions, but also some brilliant ideas. It's a matter of opinion how much you're likely to enjoy it now. I enjoy it but am still hoping for some substantive fixes.

I really enjoy Victoria alot but i'll have to 2nd Cagliostro about the bugs and strange designs but as Cornelius said I enjoy playing Victoria and would strongly recommend getting it. Of course in your case, Sicker I'd say wait a little as well.

The game under 1.02 is most definitely playable and enjoyable. Can you conquer the world as Mongolia? No. Are the major powers fun and challenging? Yes, even Britain is a challenge.

The game is definitely not finished. Just looking at the breadth of patches for their other games, a Paradox game is never finished (except for EU1). :)Will it get better? Absolutely. And thats a good thing.

Don't listen to the whiners and complainers bitching about how 1.02 is unplayable. You're not going to jump into this game and come in first place in your first game. Its a challenge and the replay value of a challenging game is much greater than one where you can conquer the world by 1850 with Uganda.

Strangely enough, people have been asking for a complex and challenging game since EU2 and HoI became winnable with any little minor. Now that we have a complex game that challenges the player to win with the largest of countries, we see people complaining that it is too hard, or "unrealistic". Ignore them. They are a very vocal minority. My current game is in 1866 playing as Turkey and its been great fun so far. I'm in 7th place and enjoying every minute of it.

Get the game and play it. If the other Paradox games are any indication of how this one will be patched, it will only get better and tweaked to be more challenging as time goes by. Right now, its very good. MP is still an issue, but I have complete confidence that it will be perfected soon.

I ve bought the game, when it was published in austria.

I ve bought the english version, cause i had no patience, and i imagined a great game, like EU II and payed about 55 Euro = ~60 $

i ve played it a few days, then i stopped, and was lookin into the vic-forum everyday, waitin for 1.2

the 1.2 changed the game, yes, but improved it? maybe... i didnt test the 1.2 yet, cause its still ..... a beta

now, in Austria the game is released in the german version. and it costs about 39 Euro = ~43 $ and in GERMAN.

so,
- I bought the english version for much money, though my english sucks.

- I didnt played it much, cause i am waitin for the patches.

- German version is out yet, much cheaper and at least with 1.2patch

-THIS MEANS: There wouldnt have been a difference, if i had not bought this game yet. Except the 16 Euros = ~20 $ i could have saved.

so , make your own opinion....

To complete it.

I dont want to critizise the Developer of this game, i know its a low budget game and they are the only ones, who make this deep strategy game like this.

So, if you want them to develope more of these games, pay the full price, put it into a corner, wait 6 months, and play the game with patch 1.xx

the only problem is, i normaly dont buy many games, cause lack of money, there are only a few games ive bought, cause i am convinced of their quality. cause i think they are worth it. i hope, Paradoxis will not disappoint me and many others

don't listen to people like stonewall who, as a fanboy, likes to attack anyone that doesn't agree with him ;)

The game is brilliant and fun, very challenging, and only has a couple of totally stupid things in it which hopefully will either be fixed or canned, read other threads for an idea on these.

Thes vocal minority certainly seems to be growing, and seem to heavily outnumber the massive minority of fanboys, but the main thing is, it is just a couple of things(admittedly quite annoying, while sometimes being amusing).

I would still say get the game, Its almost the best of the series, and hopefully will be very shortly.

come on, there's nothing wrong with a little enthousiasm. Stonewall is simply enjoying himself.

"Fanboy" seems to have a negative conotation in your words,

:)

imho, 1.02 solved many bugs and has even further improved the game stability. Let's say the game is as buggy free as they get these days = meets standards,

1.02 brought also more fun = more of a challenge compared to 1.01

I still believe some enigma's remain in the game but they will be solved in time. One of them is the weird cash reserve behaviour and the lack of the AI to produce some goods in the grand campaign,

my advice = buy now, enjoy now,

I say you should buy the game. You can still have the fun if you just mod 1.02 a little and watch out for the buggy situations (and edit the save game file if the shit hits the fan). Plus, that early in development, with every patch you get a new game, and you have to figure out a new strategy to win, so you get 5 games for the price of one by the time the 1.05 patch comes out.

I never bite the bait of a troll ;) Especially one who is so bad at it. :D

Seriously though, I have never had problems with people asking for changes and suggesting new ideas or constructive criticism. In fact, I make a lot of these types of arguments myself, admittedly mostly in the EU2 forums, not much here. The types of people I told him to ignore aren't the types that make thought out arguments, but rather the reactionary "Oh my god, its soooo hard now" or the "this is so unrealistic...how can I possibly do world conquest with Outer Mongolia" or my favorite "Paradox sucks and Johan made 1.02 so unplayable I wouldn't let them pay me to play this game." Or people who always harp about the same issues in 25 different unrelated threads and never have ANYTHING productive to say. We all know who these people are and its a shame that there is no "ignore poster" function. (This would be especially useful in the OT Forum) I was simply warning him to ignore those types of people because their opinions are, quite frankly, not worthy of looking at to try and base an opinion on the game or whether it should be purchased.

As for being a "fanboy", well I take this as a compliment. I think Paradox does an outstanding job on their games and I would readily purcahse their games over every other developer. Their customer service and support is second to none. Doesn't mean they're perfect, but if Johan and Patric say that issues are being addressed, I tend to believe them and let the issue rest until I can see what they've done. I can only imagine how they felt when they got back from vacation and looked at the boads and see people being so nasty and rude. Personally, if I had gotten as negative and nasty a reaction like that, I'd have said "fuck the childish bastards" and gone onto Crusader Kings. Thankfully, the people at Paradox are better men than me and I have confidence that their reaction will be a bit less heavy handed than mine would have been. :)

Well, I'm back to work and then home early to continue my Ottoman rampage. :)

Id say buy the game to support paradox and play it after few more patches or try 1.02 with Michaelis's economy mod. IMO 1.02 is unplayable because of broken economy.

Perhaps some "whiners" are childiss like me, but that doesnt change the fact that I absolutely hate gaming industry now because they release the games so unfinished everywhere. Little whining makes me feel better, and I dont really care about the flaming fanboys. :)

I have noticed this, thats why i was seeing if you would bite ;)

The types of people I told him to ignore aren't the types that make thought out arguments, but rather the reactionary "Oh my god, its soooo hard now" or the "this is so unrealistic...how can I possibly do world conquest with Outer Mongolia" or my favorite "Paradox sucks and Johan made 1.02 so unplayable I wouldn't let them pay me to play this game."

very true, totally agree.

Or people who always harp about the same issues in 25 different unrelated threads and never have ANYTHING productive to say

True to an extent, remember, half the time the said threads are either started, or have, references to people complaining, bashing said complainers, saying "don't listen to them/they are full of bs/ etc" While this is not entirely true...if the person said "in my opinion, the game is fine, and the people making complaints are wrong" that would be different since it was that persons opinion that the complainers are wrong, not a blanket statement, hence why sometimes people make a similar compaint in another thread not related. not defending all of the louts that you mentioned mind you.

I think Paradox does an outstanding job on their games and I would readily purcahse their games over every other developer

Totally agreed by myself, as has been proven by my CD library containing their great works.

Their customer service and support is second to none.

totally agree.

I can only imagine how they felt when they got back from vacation and looked at the boads and see people being so nasty and rude.

Some people yes. not all, I have copped similar attitudes before, and felt similar, but i also know that handling it in the screw you way doesn't work. You need to find out what it is that is annoying people, check with the rest and make a compromise, what works for me for example, may certainly not work for you and vice versa.

One of the main reasons Paradox is great is the fact that they haven't taken the screw you option, and actually do listen, I would advise them not to go the way of other software devs in this department, by still listening further, they will only increase the praise and the amount of paying customers.

Well, I'm back to work and then home early to continue my Ottoman rampage

Have fun, I hope you hand Russia their head, as a Hardcore Austrian Player(with population 30 million mod) i have an adverse outlook on them :) (gamewise).

but please, get back to the topic and forgive my BS :D
