Is it proper for a materialist empire to be known as "Holy"?

One empire in my game was called "Imperium of [capital]" then they first lost their capital to rebellion, then lost a liberation war to Peaceful Traders Megacorp.
Yeah seen that before too, its odd. It should not be hard to add popups to the game to address this, forcing AIs to re-evaluate their names randomly when one of the below happens and then tell every empire they have communications with about the change (and maybe some filler text per the trigger used).
  1. on capital set (could be from losing it, changing it to another planet [which AIs never do], it getting blown up via doomsday or cracker etc)
  2. on liberation war lost (as in 100% loss not a white peace)
  3. on ethics shifted (e.g. via factions, liberation war events).
  4. on government form or civics changed (liberation war etc).

Whilst, as others have said, this seems to be a dig at the HRE, there is a similar issue that can arise with normal empires; when they shift ethics [or have them forcibly shifted via losing a liberation war], they don't always (ever?) rename themselves automatically in vanilla.

I don't see this as a problem.

In fact, I actually like this cuz it make them feel more real.

I believe they actually do rename themselves (if not immediately, shortly thereafter) unless they are a preset or custom empire, in which case they never rename themselves no matter what. Whereas randomly generated empires WILL rename themselves after taking their third civic or having particularly large government changes (such as a change in authority due to a change in ethos).

Your post seems to imply the possibility that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is not, in fact, democratic, and that there is even a slight chance that this republic is not under the control of its people.

Heresy, I say.

Maybe their materialism became akin to a religion in itself? that happens with any ideal taken too far.

I can see both sides to this.

On one hand, it’s convenient when you can guess what kind of government an empire has based on its name.

At the same time, it’s realistic for countries to keep their old names even when they no longer fit and/or when they’re trying to brand themselves a certain way. If the United Nations of Earth loses Earth, it’s realistic for the government to keep its name because it likely still believes it’s Earth’s rightful government.

For long periods of its time the Holy Roman Empire was holy as it was started off as a empire to put the the faith of one god back to Europe, was an Empire and saw its self as the the second Rome. Your going off what the empire became in it's twilight years before Napoleon killed it off for good.

I mean, holiness is ultimately a matter of theology, but there was a great deal of tension between the HRE and the Papacy long before those "twilight years." An actually holy empire wouldn't have been involved in the Investiture Controversy (either that or it would have won, proving that God had revoked His favor from the wayward Pope and granted it to the emperor).

One empire in my game was called "Imperium of [capital]" then they first lost their capital to rebellion, then lost a liberation war to Peaceful Traders Megacorp.

This is your daily reminder that "Byzantine Empire" is an exonym, and the actual Byzantines called it the "Roman Empire" even when they didn't hold any territory within 1000 kilometers of Rome.

They did hold the city of New Rome, equal in status in every way to the original, so they do have that excuse. The fall of such territory lead to the title of Emperor of Rome being transferred to the Ottoman Sultan.

That'd be a cool thing to script. Upon losing its capital, an empire that had the name of its original capital in its name could rename the new capital to "New <capital>".

They actually used to rename themselves all the time when they changed ethics/reformed governments, but devs changed that. (it does make it easier to keep track of which AI empires existed from start of the game)

I've seen them change their names after I beat them in an ideology war, but maybe that's the only time it happens? Not sure.

In this context, I would contend the answer is no. yes, it's a HRE joke, and i do love to poke fun at what I call the secular german alliance. that said, the HRE was a far cry from stellaris's Materialists. after all, Marten Luther's trial at the diet of Worms was for Heresy. it certainly doesn't read as an HRE joke to me. I would prefer that the imperial overlord used normal empire names.
a bit off topic, but may I say that when we ignore German pronunciation, Luther's trial sounds hilarious to an English-speaking Protestant.
