@blackninja9939 keep saying it is weird, but this is how I personally (and I think many people here) learnt history - doing that weird arithmetics all the time. So why can't it be a fully integrated option to switch between the systems?
It could be justified like you couldn't use BC/AD before that system even appeared and it's easy moddable tho. I believe right now they have a lot of work to do.

I don't push them to make the changes right away as it is totally fine if it doesn't fit their current schedule. I just don't accept the argument they bring. Regarding the fact that the system didn't exist those days, well history itself is retrospective. Real time view would make no sense it terms of game design.

The is a massive difference in the type of person here on the forums and the other 98% of players. Sure, those who frequent the forums would probably have no problem with BCE dates, but the general population and player base probably would be confused. I'm willing to bet the average person doesn't actually know that BCE dates count down to 0.

By the same logic, you can argue that the same percentage of players have been raised to orient their sense of time with years ticking up and not down. Thus, for gameplay purposes presenting the year in BC as opposed to AUC would be one hell of confusion for them.
I'm pretty sure that was the rationale to use AVC in EURome (in addition to the old engine limiting dates to positive numbers back then).

Since i have the feeling nobody has read what i wrote. There is already a mod that will be in the workshop upon release

So even if it would require some effort (which black ninja clarified it does not since the date shown is just a mask for the real integer value counting forward) there is already a mod when the game is out.

And to all who mean bc or bce is mote meaningful than auc. This way you can experience and learn that all timescales are just arbitrary and there is no inherent correct date

He's saying that it would be weird to be told your army arrives in a negative time, like setting off in December 304BC, to arrive in January 303BC, just seems weird.

Because Paradox didn't design it that way.

Since i have the feeling nobody has read what i wrote. There is already a mod that will be in the workshop upon release

So even if it would require some effort (which black ninja clarified it does not since the date shown is just a mask for the real integer value counting forward) there is already a mod when the game is out.
And I take it that it will disable achievements, as usual?

Idk. But even if, f you really want an achivement you just have to play vanilla. Its always been that way and discussed numerous times. It doesnt make much sense to discuss that here. Fact is, if you really cant handle auc(which i am sure is not that big of a problem since there is still the tooltip) there is a mod for you.

embarrassing thread for paradox community, each of us has hundreds or even thousands of hours spent on Civ and Total War games which have been using descending BC timeline, each of us, i hope, read at least 2 or 3 modern academic books about Ancient history and we allow these trolls who are joined by militant fedora tippers to state rubbish "facts" that an average paradox player has no understanding of descending BC timeline?

In this application, definitely. Very few people have a good grasp of history beyond general "X event happened at some point." The further back you go the less context the average person knows about it. I would guess most people don't have an accurate perception of when events took place past 100 years ago, much less over 2000. Of course they can subtract numbers, but remembering that's who BCE works is not natural to the vast majority of people.

A solution to the date problem is to add another box on the top-bar right next to the AVC date, displaying the "BCE date" from the tooltip.

So yes, while it is two different dates to look at, it allows players to immediately grasp the date without having to check up a tooltip by mousing over AVC date.

So if we're to use Rome's founding as the start of the calendar...

...why aren't we using the Numan calendar which counted 354 days a year and started at mid-March until 154 BC when it was changed to January [1]?

I would hate for my immersion to be broken by this error. Besides, I do not understand what everyone is complaining about. Clearly they should not be using a number for the year at all, but should be giving the name of the consul that year! ;)

While said tongue in cheek, it would be one hell of a mod to somehow pull it off.

embarrassing thread for paradox community, each of us has hundreds or even thousands of hours spent on Civ and Total War games which have been using descending BC timeline
It's funny how you haven't even read the whole thread. It's been pointed out several times that Civ and Total War rely in their time estimation on turns, not years — especially Civ with its non-linear time speed. The years are only used for when you want to compare it to real life or whatever, for which purpose you can still see the BC date in the tooltip, and all events are measured in the amount of turns from now. And yes, many players can handle BC dates, it is just that many are probably not very used to it which is a reason for using it as a default date (reading one or two books some years ago doesn't change the fact that we are most accustomed to the upward ticking AD date). Still would be great to have a switch in the settings, of course.

A solution to the date problem is to add another box on the top-bar right next to the AVC date, displaying the "BCE date" from the tooltip.

So yes, while it is two different dates to look at, it allows players to immediately grasp the date without having to check up a tooltip by mousing over AVC date.
Thats what legendarymarvin modded in. And even without mod you can hover over the date and it shows bc date...

And I take it that it will disable achievements, as usual?

Is it usual for minor interface mods to block achievements? There are plenty for EU4 and Stellaris that don't. Can't say for certain either way yet, but it's quite likely possible to make a mod that changes the default to BCE without touching checksumed files.

Regardless - we'll all get used to AUC after a couple of runs anyway. The dates 2350 or 2400 didn't really mean anything to me before I played Stellaris, but you quickly get a sense of what part of the game you're in from those dates. I expect it will be the same for I:R.
