In a game before my computer died :( I started as count of Aargau became Duke of Lombardy and then King of North Africa. It is possible to move up you just need patience and the skill to pick your targets carefully.

Whoa, then you are the Habsburg guy? I started as Count of Schwaben last night and did the Duke d'Aquitaine trick, though my ruler was murdered after inheriting and I had to rely on a country cousin afterwards, breaking my chain of succession :(.
