Is it possible to play with no county-level titles?

So the situation has happened.

I've been playing a MULTIplayer game, the other player has played as tribal Scandinavia and he has reformed the germanic faith, the only detail on what kind of reforms he had is that he's a head of the germanic religion now.

It happened so I wiped him out leaving him with not single county, but a duke level title of germanic church. I really thought he's out of the game then, but then it appeared he didnt have a game over, but was moving his very small army somewhere. With, again, no county-level titles, nor any minor titles, as I then discovered.

All my life I was sure I can't play with no counties left, or some other dynasty member with titles. How is it possible? Could he somehow maybe edit the save game, since he was hosting? Is it some secret reformation set that gives such ability? Does any of the devs know maybe?

Edit: Another weird moment was that initially the Casus Belli was a Subjugation, but when I peaced out he lost all of his titles except for Head of the church one, even though he had to become my vassal with this CB.

Unless he's a patrician with a barony under an existing republic or you're missing a county he owns somewhere or he's actually just an observer?

Some titles, including mercenaries, provincial revolts, holy orders and adventurers can exist without any titles below them. Religious heads are the same, though usually with Temporal authority that title should work like normal secular titles.

I am sure he has no counties, nor baronies or barony-level holdings, just a duke-level head of religion.
He's not an observer either, since he can still control this small band of troops.

That works for AI, but this is an actual player. Shouldn't that be a game over for him?

Nope, it's the same for a player too. It's just very unlikely for it to happen with a player character, since it's normally impossible to end up with most of these titles. You can use console commands to play as one of these "unlanded" characters, no problem.

However, the Temporal HoR titles as supposed to work like normal landed titles. I can only assume something weird happened with the vassalization from the Subjugation CB.

I once made two independent single county kingdoms next to each other. I gave the kings all my spare ducal titles before granting independence. One wiped out another but the wiped out king was still a king with the kingdom title and all ducal titles.

Oddly enough, I could land him even though he was independent. Landing him fixed the problem and everything went back to normal.

Just so you know observers can control troops and any character in game. You can tell they're an observer because there's a little X next to their player character portrait at the to left.

I'm not sure people know this but if you enter as an observer you can press control on a character to 'play' as them. The ai plays at the same time and you don't get to see events though.

Does he have any vassals left anywhere? If he has a revokable vassal the game should keep him alive until he has a chance to "re-land" himself.

The rule is that so long as you hold at least one title of Count level or higher (landed or not) you can continue playing. Mercenaries and Holy Orders all hold landless Duke level titles so they are okay, similarly all religious head titles 9eg Pope, Fylkir, Caliph are either King or Duke level, but also landless.

Playing landless is fun but until the character gets some form of landed title their military strength will be minimal or zero unless they are a merc or holy order band of course.
