They are playable in the late game when they're Muslim, they're playable at the start with ruler designer if you make them Christian or muslim, and they're playable as tengri if you change pagans to playable in the game files.

Are they playable? Even with Ruler Designer and Sword of Islam?

As long as they're not a religion other than Christian or Islam, a republic, or a theocracy you can play as them. They aren't present at 1066 though so you'll either have to use a later starting date or play until they appear and convert to a playable religion.

I suppose you could trigger the events that spawn and convert them yourself, from the console, if you really wanted to. They’re really not at all balanced for a human; in particular, the game is not designed to turn off the assistance the AI gets when a human plays them.

I don't think the Islamic or Orthodox Mongols get the Mongol invasion CB, do they?

Also, if you manage to play as a pagan Mongol, I'm pretty sure you're forced to convert somewhere down the line. I think i started as the first Orthodox GH leader, his pagan brother killed him, but then the brother and all his vassals changed to some other religion. Not entirely sure, though.

Incorrect, partially. The only lose the Mongol Invasion CB if they turn any flavor of Christian.

Of course, the real Church of the East does not consider itself a “heresy,” does not much resemble groups such as the Cathars or Bogomils, and its schism predates that between Rome and Constantinople, and indeed the Pentarchy. It’s not as if it was trying to expand into Greece and Russia in the 12th and 13th centuries while the Ecumenical Patriarch was trying to stamp them out. For that matter, when the Mongol Khan sent a Christian, Rabban Bar Sauma, to Rome to make an alliance with the Pope, Nicholas IV recognized them as legitimate. It is strange that the Mongols can convert to two other forms of Christianity, but not the one that historically had the most influence on them.

Patch 1.08 is a huge improvement over how the Eastern churches were represented in the game before, but the designation of religions that had been well-established for centuries before there even was an Ecumenical Patriarch, and still have believers today, as “heresy” of the Orthodox church does not make a lot of sense.

True, but in game, that's how it is ATM. I'd personally be all for Nestorianism being its own proper religion like what they did with Miaphysites.

That would be much more accurate. In game, the way things are now does have the consequence that Sartaq can immediately choose to convert to Orthodox Christianity by decision, which might be useful for diplomacy.

well a real easy mod that anyone can do will fix this problem. If you go into your religion file and remove parent = orthodox then boom. not a heresy anymore..allthough it'll be treated like any other main christian religion so conflict between orthodox and nestorianism will take on an entirely different flavor. you'll also loose any decisions or options that you'd other wise have if something required Orthodox or heresy of orthodox.
