I don't think this should be a policy to begin with, but that's just opinion.
Maybe. To be honest, it would be purely cosmetic, and thinking about it from a programmers standpoint, I don't see it being a terribly difficult thing to mod in.

Having it set for the name list could work and technically not require a game modification. But it would remove some of the flexibility of allowing it to be a policy, meaning you cant change your mind mid-game (role-playing a [pro/re]gressive social change, or what have you)

Besides a few other mod ideas I'm mulling around with, i think this would be an interesting one to create.

For now, all the portraits are the same for once specie (except for humans), so there'd be no visual difference between the queen and a worker, and you'd have to roleplay it in your head anyway (which kinda ruins all the awesomeness of this idea).
By the way, eusociality isn't unique to arthropods, mole rats are also eusocial.

species other than humans don't actually seem to have genders

Don't think this is exactly true. They may not have gender portraits, but one can have them with female names if the name list they have is set up for it, ie Mercedes Romero of the Blorg.

yeah but that's just the human name list

if you don't pick either the human portraits or namelist there's no apparent distinction

Yes please. Please allow us to RP matriarchal or patriarchal societies.

But if not, I'm sure it won't be hard to mod in. :)

You can. I don't recall the source and I am on my phone however I am 99% it was from one of the devs.

You can designate portraits to be available for leaders and others for pop's. So you could for example design if you wanted, an insect species with one list of portraits for workers and another for leaders.

Well I guess this depends on if you are wanting this to be an entirely cosmetic "enhancement", or an actual game play mechanic.

Personally if its the former I don't really see a need to introduce that into the game, it's crass at best.

If its the latter, I think that any society must transcend certain social constructs before its ready to start exploring the stars. Maybe I watched too much TNG, and having Picard as a moral barometer is affecting me. So if you are going to do this the only sensible way would be for a government types that tolerate sexual discrimination and give a penalty if the member of the wrong sex is in the wrong job.

The antipodal government would encourage sexual diversity, so you need a 50/50 ratio of male to female or you take a hit on research or whatever.

However, that being said the pops on the planet in game don't represent one pop. Its a diverse group of pops, that work live and are friends together. You can expect, even on your home planet, that even though your phenotype is all the same, that you have different races, religions and disagreements about which side you butter your bread.

So could they do this? Yeah. Would it add anything to the actual gameplay apart from "immersion"? No. Would it add an annoying layer of micromanagement? Meh, I guess thats a matter of opinion.

And so far as name lists go, if you use a custom one you just supply it. You can supply only names of caste_1 to Leader, caste_1 and caste_2 to Scientist, caste_2 to Admiral and General, whatever you feel like doing.

Sexism requires choice. It's not sexist if it's biologically determined, like a hive queen or all warriors of a species being male (or female), just as it's not sexist that women do all the childbearing in humans. (Childrearing is another matter!)

Since this ONLY applies to leader characters, and only shows up in portraits and names, it can be tweaked pretty easily, I think. Of course if you're role-playing that sort of stuff you'll probably be using alien name lists, and gender perception is going to rely on roleplaying anyway.

And worth pointing out that for ants and bees *all* named characters would be female, as drones have exactly one function. So you would only need the one alien name list for Space Ants.

The discussion of the gender politics of a hypothetical ant species seems a little silly to me, to be honest.

I think it'd be a neat option. Is it worth it to install as a full feature, with bonuses and maluses? Some would say so, but I'm leaning towards no.

As always for neat side ideas like this, my hope is in mods. I hope to see every form of discrimination ( and the flip side, every equality) found in humanity, and several that are not, on steam or the forums before too long. I don't care what it is. Sexism, racism, classism, extreme sexual dimorphism, the works. It'd be neat and give more options and flavor for the particular race you are playing.

But in the base game? Nah.

And that's not even including the storm of manufactured outrage and hurt fee-fee's that will result in such options being standard. But then again, that would be hilarious to watch. So hey, if Paradox wants to do it, let em. I'm not a developer.

More variety is always better. Humans shouldn't be the only species with more than one portrait type, and I'd expect Paradox will eventually catch up and implement it. Even given that racial and gender differences will be too subtle to bother with for many species, others may have far greater diversity than us - domestic canines are a good example of a vast variety of appearances that can nonetheless interbreed.

Sexual dimorphism is pretty common in Terran species and is one thing we can confidently expect to find in sexually reproducing aliens (but a big hello to all you Parthenogenics out there!)

This is already in the game.
Because you can't even TELL whether or not F'xtul'kzk Zz'yk'hgnag'n is male or female or a crazy smugslug hermaphrodite. Their name gives no clue, their portrait gives no clue.
So you can headcanon whatever you want about your society's gender politics.
