Like the title says, many Arthropoid colony forming species (ants, bees, termites, that sort of thing) are primarily matriarchal societies, the few males that exist are mainly to be used for impregnating the hive queens, and every other role is filled with sterile female offspring of the queen.

Can we set certain roles for leaders to only be eligible for females (or males) of your species?
This would be more "true-to-life" for many of these types of societies, or make for a fun modifier on a different phenotype (Amazonian Fennek society or something).

I fully endorse this... though in your particular example, the male species probably don't even need to be mentioned if their roles are so limited, so having only female gender and female names would suffice.

And yes, me wants snu-snu.

I tried to keep the topic generic, hence sticking to existing hive species, but the race I want to try and recreate uses their males as a Warrior Caste, as well as breeders, everyone else would be female. Hence naming the males as well, I'd like to assign them to military roles only. ;)

I actually was wondering this - but forgot completely that I wanted to know. There are some sci fi species that you will need to establish gender roles in order to mimic.

My biggest concern is how complex this would be to actually program. You'd need variables for pretty much every profession. I mean, it's one thing if we are just talking about patriarchal or matriarchal rule, since it only affects the head of state, but the other leaders?

Should be a spectrum IMO. After all species historically was matriarchical but not in the current era for the most; the fact that the empress is always female is one of the few hold overs.

So I would have it like this:

Strongly Matriarchal: only females can rule and be leaders(so every position will be female)
Lightly Matriarchal: only females can rule(only the empire's ruler is female, all other positions are open to both men and women)
Equality: both men and women can rule
Lightly Patriarchical: only males can rule(only the empire's ruler is male, all other positions are open to both men and women)
Strongly Patriarchal: only males can rule and be leaders(so every position will be male)

Nice. The more I think about it, the more I don't think it would be that hard to implement. That is of course - simple arm chair programing. As it seems that leaders, scientist, governors, what not all appear to be products of the RNG. Simply force the gender to be compliant, or just demand another roll.

As someone who wants to eventually play as a civilization led by a benevolent Ant-Queen, Mother to All, I would also be interested in gender limitations. No self respecting hive would ever be led by a king.

I just don't understand why space needs sexism.
It doesn't need it, of course not. But not everybody wants to play lets-be-friends in space (edit: the irony of using the Blorg avatar is not lost on me here :p), having more realistic (rather, not in how it is, but how it can be, at least in terms of local history) ways to represent the species you wish to play as is always a positive. No matter what that may entail.

After all, this is only a video game.

species other than humans don't actually seem to have genders
While it's true the portraits don't make a difference, and even the names are for the most part ambiguous, for me it's the titles that matter. Warrior races need their kings, and ant people need their queens. To have the wrong gender in those cases could be quite immersion breaking, I'd say.

Doesn't really cover everything. For example in some ant-like society all ruling positions (including governors) will be taken be females while males will take science\tactical roles (they need to entertain themselves somehow between their supposed duties after all).
Possible solution could be lists with names for all professions. And if there are male/female name only, game undestands that other gender is not welcomed here.

Is it really a good idea to tie the policy to the name list, though?
