Does anyone know if it is possible to extract toll on trade passing through choke points like Öresund (the narrow strait separating Denmark from Sweden). I know that the Danish made a lot of gold off that trade, since all ships entering or leaving the Baltic Sea had to pay toll to the Danish crown.
I imagine there would be similar situations elsewhere in the world, like in the Hellespont, the Russian rivers, or even the Gibraltar strait...
Toll incomes in such areas would constitute a significant part of state finances, I suspect.
Beta testers? Johan? =)
