I need to know this as Im playing a Milan->Koi game and am wondering what to do with the pope. In the diplo faq it says:

3.4. Annex
Ah, the hard point : "how do I Diplo-Annex ?" Answer follows.

Conditions
- Relations at 190 or higher at the time of the DA : it can be lower during the wait-time.
- Length of vassalization of 10 years or more.
- The vassal must be at peace.
- Stronger economy.
- Same Alliance.
- Compatible religions : you have to be able to conclude an RM with the country (you do not NEED an RM, you only should be capable of).

- Common borders : a common border between 2 TPs at the other side of Earth is enough, but you need one. There's no way to DA island countries that don't own firm land elsewhere.

The royal marriage option isn't greyed out but its not possible to conclude a rm with the pope. How does this work?

It is possible, if you manage to get the Papal States as your vassal.

They won't accept a royal marriage, so you may only vassalise them by force. Diplomatic annexation doesn't require a royal marriage, just vassalage. So this is the way to go, force-vassal then diploannex.

Thx for the answers. I thought it would be something like that but I want to be sure so I dont do some silly mistake
Annexing the Papal States is a silly mistake, IMO. All Catholic countries will have a CB on you for occuping Rome.

I like when other countries declares wars on me so I can take their cots and make them my vassals more easily. No big deal. Austria is my ally so don't worry ;) . Relations seems to get worse over time when somebody have a cb on me but I will be rich and can bribe my allies. To sum it up, Don't worry, be happy/ Bob Marley

The AI does not worry about CB's. They will DoW you even with a peace agreement (I've seen this). And they will take the stab hit plus the BB hit.

This is true. Venice declared war upon me (I was the Ottomans) less than a year after I had just whooped them in a war. I wanted to spare them the humiliation of another blood bath and signed a white peace immediately.

@Fnuco: I applaud thee for your musical correctness :)

Depends on wat way you do it. There are IIRC three routes to the KOI. The easiest is perhaps to take the provinces you need, wait for your BB to drop below 5 and cultivate good relations with Austria.
It's all on the AGC-EEP website anyway.

Still a good idea in a lot of cases.

First you force annex them. Helps if they're dumb enough to DOW you. As has already been stated, you can't vassalise them otherwise.

Take one, or no, provinces. Force vassalise them instead. Wait 20 years. If you're lucky they taken more provinces in the meantime. Bribe them up to 200 relations, invite them to an alliance, wait one month. Hit pause. Annex them. Release them as a vassal. They get Rome, you get everything else.

If you're lucky you can get a large chunk of Italy with very little little bad boy this way. And the CB doesn't matter as long as you release that one province the same day you annex them. Even if they only have Roma and Marche, you still get a province to connect your north-italian and south-italian holdings.

I'll give a precision : it's a silly mistake, early on in the game when there're many catholic powers and you're not all-powerful.

But when reform hits, and when the HRE and italian minors have mostly disappeared, there're not many catholics left. Moreover, at this date you're richer than all of them. Once you manage to stay ahead of them in all techs, and you've got a size big enough, go on, don't hesitate to take Rome and keep it. Either you're way too powerful, and the catholics won't attack you. Or you're allied with them anyway. Or you want them to attack you so that you can expand at 1 BB/province.
