Is it possible in EU-3?

1. Is it possible in EU-3 to switch from 3D to 2D view? Just because 3D is nice, but not useful (flags is not discernible, mountain look like hills and marsh - look like forest, etc). EU-3 3D map is a most terrible map.

2. Is it possible to see the map before game release? I dont know about other countries, but map of Russia in EU-2 is a one big LOL :rofl: Volgograd in 1419 (it is name of this city only after 1961), Tver in the place of Smolensk, Ufa on the Volga, etc, etc. I think, mapmaker in Paradox has missed geography lessons in his childhood Or he use Ptolemeys map of the world.

IMHO, if people from different countryes can check the map, then too many errors can be avoided.

Personally, I think a polished, better looking 2D map would have been a better idea, but we'll have to see how it turns out I suppose

I really doubt that will happen. Too much work for not a lot of gain.

IMHO, if people from different countryes can check the map, then too many errors can be avoided.

That's partly what Beta testers are for. And with a bit of luck this map can be more easily modded to correct any mistakes that might pop up.

I am in full agree here. Sadly, the only game I've ever seen with a 2D/3D button was Spartan. Ofcourse Spartans "3D" wasn't all that bad. It was more like 2D that you could view at different angles. If paradox were to make "3D" games like Spartan, that would be pretty cool as well.

And I definately agree with you on the map issue. I'm currently making a map for EUII that starts in 1453, and I want to have historically accurate borders. Well, after looking at a map, I found out that Tver and Pskov didn't border at that point, but were seperated by Muscovy. But in order to realistically depict that on the EUII map, I'd have to put Tver in Moskva and make Tver province the capital of Muscovy! And Hungary is too bunched up in the EUII map. It's supposed to be more oval shaped than one big circle! I definately hope they improve Russia and Hungary in EUIII.

Sure, if you're a betatester. Or if Johan includes wider screen shots in his diary entries.

And your English is good enough to understand, but as the proverb says, you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Try complimenting the staff that brings us the game, and offer constructive criticism (you do the latter, at least); don't insult PI by claiming the mapmaker was an idiot.

I know it's not currently the best looking map in the world, but let me point out two things:

1, We're in the beta states, so it has a lot of improvements to be made.

2, If you look at the screenshots where the map is fairly zoomed in (ie, the one with the Anglo-Scottish border), it doesn't look that bad. It's only the fully zoomed out screenshots (ie, the one with Spain and bits of France and Portugal) that appear ugly, which no doubt is because such levels of detail are hard to maintain from such heights.

So, here's hoping it improves somewhat between now and release, and that it's best to stay zoomed in

PS: Now I've defended your map Paradox, please make some decent sprites!

I also hope the new 3d thingy doesn't become a resource hog that forces Paradox people to cut processor time from AI decision making to allow for eye candy. That would be fatal...

I bet Paradox is doing every thing they can to make this game great. I doubt that they would make a 3D map if they thought that it would ruing gameplay or look ugly. We have to remember that it's almost a year before release and that many improvements will probably come.

But I personally think that the 3D map is taking the series one step forward. I don't want a copy of EU2. I want a brand new EU3!

I've always seen people say this ever since 3d became a reality. However, someone has still to demonstrate how, in these kind of games, 3d is better than 2d. It is, at best (if 3d is done right), the same thing, and in many cases it causes trouble in the information you need to run your kingdom.

I agree - we have contributors to these forums from everywhere from Indonesia to Uzbekhistan to Canada. EU3 maps and history should be more or less error free if this resource is used properly.

Good point. I guess some of us just felt that the 2D map was part of what made EU such a great game. And I think its no so much the 2D over 3D, but which one helps the map improve said gameplay. IMHO, the 2D map was better for gameplay, partly because it was 2D, and partly because of the feel of it. That 3D map doesn't have the same feel as the old one.

I agree. I'd rather have a Toyota that runs nicely and doesn't break down all the time than have a fancy sports car that looks nice but runs like crap.

Of course, I won't be complaining if the car looked nice and ran great...
