Is it possible for any game to fail as hard as moo3 did ? ( I don't think it is )

  • As many have said, I was really disappointed by Mass Effect 3. With the exception of the Rannoch and Tuchanka arcs, the writing and storytelling was a major decrease in quality from the previous games (largely due to the fact that the lead writer of ME and ME2 left). The gameplay stripped away nearly all the exploration elements and had a really silly sidequest system. The third act was a huge anticlimax for the series, with the story slowly degenerating from "meh" to "really damn stupid" over the course of the final three missions. The hyped up final battle for Earth is a huge dissappointment and the ending, well, everyone already knows.
  • Rome Total War 2. I got it after all the patches and was still dissappointed. The design choices were a combination of dumbing down some elements and overcomplicating others. The most crippling aspect is the engine, which has no built in unit collision, making battles feel weightless. The over 10 years old original Rome: Total War is still a better game, and I personally consider Medieval 2 to be the pinnacle of the series.
  • Homefront. Good premise, terrible execution. The first and last game I preordered. Get a game that was hyped for its writing team, and then it turns out to be 6 missions long. Ugh.
  • The Elder Scrolls Online. Not a bad game by any sense of the word (I have a soft spot for mass PvP combat and the setting), but excluding PvP, the game was just painfully average. So much potential, so little pay off.

Not having motivation for Reapers ever to be revealed would be a major cop out. But Mac Walters sure did tried to find the worst possible motivation.

I don't know. I likened them to eldritch abominations thanks to Soverign from the first Mass Effect. Their goals were beyond our understanding. We didn't need to know. We just needed to stop them. After ME2 I would have been fine with it just being reproduction and choosing the "best" species every cycle to "uplift" and kill everyone else for being "unworthy". But no, like you said, Walters had to get cute, and go for some BS explanation even worse than something simple.

I think the ME3 ending could of been better if you had a high enough War Assets rating that you didn't need the Deus Ex Machina, and you could beat The Reapers with overwhelming numbers...

Total War Rome II was atrocious on release. It took more than 14 patches to make it a decent game.

14 patches later, I can't launch the game anymore, whereas it at least worked at launch, despite being a shit game

to understand how shit Rome 2 was at launch:

- height advantage wasn't even implemented until I think the 2nd or 3rd hotfix

Spore. It was my first true gaming disappointment. So much hype, so many lies. I even bought the Galactic Edition; my first gaming purchase with my own money without relying on the parents. I've since had many disappointments from EA, but that betrayal will always hold a special place. Never before nor ever since, has so much potential been so squandered.

I had the exact same situation. I was young back then (looks into the horizon, sheds a tear) and I believed in all those lies 'this is going to be a gaming revolution; a simulator of Evolution'.
On top of that most of critics were for some absurd reason giving it high notes, my favourite video game magazine in my country gave it 95/100 (lol).

Then I played the game and realized it is the most infantile idiocy in the history of strategy game genre.

To this day I don't trust so called 'proffesional game journalists' because of that betrayal :p I always check user scores and opinions.

On this topic, does anyone know if there is some sort of Razzie awards for video games?

For those who haven't heard of the Razzies, it's a sort of tongue-in-cheek award for movies. The criteria for winning is for sucking so bad that you stand out. Fun times.

Shogun 2, especially the Fall of The Samurai expansion, is widely considered the best Total War game so far.
HAHAHA ARE YOU SMOKING OPIUM
Shogun 2 was like somebody said "Hey, let's make Empire 2, but with a map an eighth the size, and with only 5 unit types. That'll be great!"
I came in here to put Shogan 2 alongside Rome 2 on the list of "It's shit, Jim".
More on topic however, as recent 4X games go, I was underwhelmed by Civ Beyond Earth.
I keep playing it every now and again, trying to force myself to like it out of respect for its grandfather, SMAC.
It is not a bad game. But it is a worse game than Civ V, for which there is really no excuse considering that it is just Civ V with supposedly several years of additional development time.
'Underwhelming' is the correct word.

That's not the worst. The AI just flat out couldn#t use siege equipment until... I think half a year after release?

Yup. China would make complete sense, but North Korea...? No matter how good the new game might be, I just can't buy into North Korean becoming some kind of super power.

Ya but that at least had precedence with CA's track record. Siege has always been shit in Total War, but to not have height advantage, a feature that every past Total War game has had, that's just fucking weird.

I take it we aren't particularly confident about Total War: Warhammer. It looks good so far, but based on prior experience...

I don't even consider Warhammer a TW game. It's just blatant pandering to the masses, since they realized they had already milked all the mainstream eras and periods. Instead of staying true to their franchise and going to another maybe less popular historical era, they decided to make everything magic. TW died the moment it went fantasy.

I would buy it in a heartbeat if it were 40k.
But I don't know shit about Fantasy Warhammer and I do not care to find out.
I don't understand why they don't want my money.

...and also Total War has been going downhill since Medieval II, an opinion you may have inferred from my previous unkind comments about Shogun II.

So yes, 'not confident' is a succinct statement of my attitude.

Well I'll wait and see but to be honest I'm not expecting much.
As far as I know they still use the same enginge for the tactical battles so I doubt any of the problems I have with combat in rome2 are going to dissappear.

  • Surviving Mars: Digital Deluxe Edition
E. T. The Extra Terrestrial video game. I was a kid, and a friend had an Atari system. We tried to play it. It sucked. It was funnier watching someone else play it.

(I had a TI-99/4A, with TI Invaders, Parsec and Tombstone City... all pretty fun games for the time. One friend had an Odyssey, one had Atari, and another got a Commodore 64 when it came out.)

Spore. It was my first true gaming disappointment. So much hype, so many lies. I even bought the Galactic Edition; my first gaming purchase with my own money without relying on the parents. I've since had many disappointments from EA, but that betrayal will always hold a special place. Never before nor ever since, has so much potential been so squandered.

let me give you an advice for the future: don´t buy EA games?

I don't even consider Warhammer a TW game. It's just blatant pandering to the masses, since they realized they had already milked all the mainstream eras and periods. Instead of staying true to their franchise and going to another maybe less popular historical era, they decided to make everything magic. TW died the moment it went fantasy.
TW had an amazing warhammer mod for one of the games which was played by *A lot* of people, it was hugely popular. And any why wouldn't warhammer be a tw game? The army sizes and how they interact fits great with the battle system.

I will personally sit down and watch how the game does before buying it though because rome 2 and all the other less succesfull game is a clear proof that it is not gurenteed to be succesful.
