Uhh... what do you think 4X means?
Something built on a Civ engine is pretty much the prototypical example of a 4X, and both BE and SMAC are.
If they're not 4X, nothing is.
Wow, I agree with Oscot for once

That sounds dreadful. This is unrelated to games that have failed, but I really hope No Man's Sky delivers. A game about procedurally-generated aliens and exploration with effectively limitless planets? Sign me up m8.
That sounds dreadful.
Procedural generation is just an apologist's way of saying "No storyline, make your own fun". And you can get away with having players make their own fun in something like Stellaris, where a kind of narrative emerges from the natural competitive setup of competition-over-resources. But "Wandering around looking at things" is not a competitive sport. Also, I can do it cheaper and at higher res by going outside.
So I'm basically imagining No Man's Sky as Oblivion but with no storyline. And Oblivion was pretty damn tedious even with a storyline.
Am I missing something important from this picture?
So it's Rimworld, but with just one guy and with actual graphics?NMS isn't just a walking simulator, you build things, juggles resources and try to reach the centre.
Bro, do you even 420?You're not going to be exploring the universe in real life any time soon, and you probably wouldn't see any floating mountains if you did![]()
Black Flag was fun, but would've been better if they had cut out the Assassin stuff and just made it about pirates. That's my opinion, at least.I'm not going to argue about the increasingly lame plot, but I'm telling you, the second one was the height of the franchise. At least up to Assassin's Creed III, I stopped after that one. I heard Black Flag was good though, but I hadn't played it.

OK, that sounds less awful.
Bro, do you even 420?
How about Star Citizen?
With the massive amount of crowd funding and hype, it could easily become one of the worst gaming disasters once it's clear that it's really not doing what it's promised to..
It already is.
Doesn't prevent it from being an unmitigated disaster.Oh really? I thought they are still releasing modules in phase slowly.
That sounds dreadful.

For people with literal autism, maybe. I hate it, put it that way.Minecraft is essentially "No storyline, make your own fun" on a single planet, and it was as far from a flop as you can get.
This is only serving to undo the work Paragon Exile did on me.NMS has a small plot in that there's supposedly something worth seeing at the center of the galaxy, but nothing forces players to go there if they don't want to. There's also the ability to name things you discover (planets, creatures, aliens, plants) that anyone who follows will see. It's multiplayer, but the galaxy is so immense you're not going to randomly run into your buddies, and even running into other players may be uncommon. As you explore you harvest resources which can be used in recipes to upgrade your ship, your space suit, and your weapons.
Yes, the lies were so very real. Then that lack of auto save function and CTD...Spore. It was my first true gaming disappointment. So much hype, so many lies. I even bought the Galactic Edition; my first gaming purchase with my own money without relying on the parents. I've since had many disappointments from EA, but that betrayal will always hold a special place. Never before nor ever since, has so much potential been so squandered.
