Is it possible for any game to fail as hard as moo3 did ? ( I don't think it is )

MoO 3 wasn't a fail, it was just misunderstood.
People expected something like the previous two games (a simple Civilization-like 4X strategy), but got something else entirely.
It was just too complicated for most players, and that's why it was such a disappointment for many.
Nevertheless, it's a decent game if you have the patience to figure everything out. Some people actually like overly complex mechanics, games like Aurora and Distant Worlds have their fans too.
Stellaris isn't a continuation of a series, so there's no such problem. We'll get what we expected.

I disagree. It is a well known fact that the AI in MoO3 was never finished by the developer and couldn't fight its way out of a wet paper bag. It was like playing a 4x against an AFK user.

So, I think context is important when discussing flops. Obviously, the award goes to MOO3 for me, as I've stated.

Moving slightly off-topic, I was thinking of making a list of every space 4X game I've played and putting it in some kind of hierarchy. Off the top of my head and going quickly, here's what I've got:

Classics
  • MOO
  • MOO2
  • GalCiv2 with full expansions
  • Stars!
Enjoyable with Few Flaws But Not A Classic
  • Ascendancy
  • GalCiv I
  • Armada 2526
Enjoyable In Spite of More Than A Few Flaws
  • Endless Space
Not Good Games (but maybe could be)
  • GalCiv 3
  • Star Ruler (??-- I swear I tried it...but can't really remember)
Oh The Humanity
  • MOO3
  • StarDrive
  • Legends of Pegasus (based on comments I've read)
Games I've Never Tried And You Should Weigh In On
  • StarDrive 2
  • Horizon
  • Distant Worlds: Universe
  • Civ: BE (only sort of counts)
  • Star Ruler 2 (am I making this up?)

So, why am I so excited for Stellaris? Because, quite frankly, it's something new. From what I gather, DW:U is closest to it, but since I've never played it, I can't say for sure.

If you are going to list Civ:BE, I think that you should add "Alpha Centauri" to the list in the Classics section. It was an amazingly great sci-fi 4X.

I agree with the amazingly great sci-fi thing. Still play it occasionally.
But strongly disagree classifying it (or Civ BE) as 4x.

Uhh... what do you think 4X means?

Something built on a Civ engine is pretty much the prototypical example of a 4X, and both BE and SMAC are.
If they're not 4X, nothing is.

A wonderful space opera sim that has the slight flaw of being nearly impossible to figure out how to conquer planets. How exactly do I load up my transports with soldiers and get them to attack? Because apparently that is slightly bugged.

Thank you a lot, now I know finally it wasn't just me...

there was a post a few days ago in the pdx forums asking "what if stellaris flops" and it got me thinking is it possible for a game to flop as hard anymore ? there is so much communication between forums / twitter/ youtube/ so much quick online press - even steam's 2 hour refund policy all making it hard to fail as hard as in the old days.

Don't get me wrong I've been disappointed recently (rome2, Grand Ages Medieval in particular) but not to the level that I was for MOO3.

Particularly for Paradox games - we know in quite some detail exactly what we are going to get hours of gameplay (warts/bugs and all ) and very active devs make for good releases .

so what do you guys think?
I for one I only worry if I don't see gameplay and the team members seem to live in a Ivory tower - the exact opposite of pdx's approach.

what were the worst games with the most hype in recent years?
SimCity perhaps? Most people couldn't play the thing, then when they could it was crap.

I don't understand this reasoning. That all makes it easier to fail.
Because if something is awful, now everyone knows about it.
As opposed to in the past where you had this situation:
Thank you a lot, now I know finally it wasn't just me...
...and people might have incorrectly thought that it was just themselves failing to git gud as opposed to a systemic problem with the game itself.
Luckily, we no longer live in such a world, and everyone is quickly informed so as to hate the right things at the right time.
Which means a dev can't hide a bad feature in the fog of war between player's understanding.

It shipped with conquer as the only way to win the game. Don't make a game with just one person.

A good, but weird game. Innovative, different from everything else. Think like EU4- very boardgamey where the diplomacy system runs on drawing cards, development runs on collecting planet resources and war is actually pretty awesome.

lmao i hope you are kidding and not actually are serious
but if you are just go to the planet screen where your units are located and select them all and ungarison them so they are no longer in green font
now use the transports to load them up and unload at enemy planet

Nobody has mentioned HOI3 yet. That sucked badly on release, but to be fair to Paradox they fixed the major issues after a number of patches and they have since improved their QA and Release process.

...so hopefully Stellaris will be in good shape :)

For me though the cake has to be D3. With that budget and franchise it should have been the greatest thing since sliced bread, or women deciding shaving their armpits is the way to go.

Yeah Diablo 3 was one of the worst sequels ever seeing the light of days, far from a financial flop, really far but Diablo is pretty much the mother of item hunting and in vanilla you needed 50 to 100 hours until you got a really special item and hunting a set was pretty much impossible. I could make a huge list of flaws but this one aspect was the core of Diablo (especially 2), the main reason people played it for a decade after release until today. Luckily Blizzard was able to repair this part of the game and I do like it somehow but the list of flaws is still long and the release version was unacceptable.

It has been a long time since I've been disappointed with a gaming purchase simply because it's so much easier these days to know exactly what you're getting. At the very least you can wait until a day or two after release and see what the players have to say which can be informative, though not always -- for instance, if I had bothered to listen to the early player feedback about Diablo 3, I would have never known that it's one of the best hack-and-slash action games ever made.

But anyway, Spore and Black & White are two titles on my list of gaming disappointments because the developers blatantly lied about what the games were like. I was disappointed in Supreme Commander, too, not because it was a bad game but because it had a serious bug in the game engine that caused it to run like crap if you were using a popular brand of sound card, which the developers were well aware of before release. Oh, and the bug was never fixed, so that was a nice slap in the face.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Being an Elite Founder for Gal Civs 3, I have to agree that it has been disappointing. Little innovation from Gal Civs 2 (which I loved) and the DLC has been completely underwhelming. If I wasn't an Elite Founder and didn't get these DLC "for free" I'd be even more pissed. A lot of the DLC released so-far should have been in the game (selling Mega Events? C'mon Stardock, that's just greedy). And the Mercenaries "expansion" was weaksauce.

There's still hope it can be a good game, maybe even great. But for now, it's a bore. Haven't touced it in months. Stellaris looks like it's gonna be a much better game.

The last game I recall being completely dissapointed in was AC: Revelations. It felt like they just took the boring bits of the first three games (which I had enjoyed) and made a game out of that and never bothered to include anything resembling stakes or plot in what passed for a story.
I also bought TW Rome 2, but at least that one got patched into something decent even though it took about a year.

Sorry, my mistake, I meant Revelations. Edited the comment. No idea how I got them mixed up. Brotherhood is actually my favourite too.

Looking back on years of pre-ordering games (I know, you really shouldn't pre-order, unless it's Stellaris) my biggest mistake was Silent Hunter V

I even bought the Steelbook Edition. I ended up playing like 20 mins and then dismissing it. It had Ubisoft's infamous "always-on even though it's single player"-tech and the servers could not handle it well. Ubisoft gave away some "we're sorry" games and I chose Prince of Persia, which I ended up playing for several days.

I really liked Silent Hunter III and played AOTD Mods for weeks. Silent Hunter IV, I didn't even bother, because of the Pacific theater and so I was hyped for Silent Hunter V's Wolf Pack Atlantic theater. The game still collects dust in my game collection (but did't stop me to pre-order ANNO 2205 or HOMM7)
