It is as the title states. I almost always have great parents and the children are malformed numskulls. This situation has vexed me for nearly a dozen games! On occasion I get a "normal" grandchild but that is not the norm either. Do I have some seriously bad luck or is something whack?

My guess is you're marrying brides with positive genetic traits like genius and quick and strong. For some reason, this seems to often lead to negative genetic traits like hunchback. It shouldn't. But it's well observed that it does.

I now avoid positive green traits. They're more trouble then they're worth.

Yes, this is clearly broken. No, I've never heard a word that Paradox has acknowledged this or intends to fix it. So avoid these traits if you don't want lispy hunchbacked imbecile sons.

I wish there was a "send to monastery" option for kin. And no, I don't mean assign them to bishoprics, I mean it functions like the recycle bin on your desktop and you never see the half-formed cretans again.

Well genetics isn't broken just because your genius parents didn't have a any or all genius kids. It may still be broken though. I think one thing CK does right is that upbringing is a lot more important than genetics in a childs growth to adulthood.

However, I have also seen that genetics don´t play any role in your children. I have had genius mothers, lisp ones, quick... and my children have NEVER (in 3 full games) taken any of the genetic traits (bad or good) of their parents. Perhaps the chance of getting the genetic traits of your parents is too low?

On a game my Duke had 3 sons: 1 Genius, 1 Strong and 1 Hunchback.

The hunchback reigned for almost 70 years. And fathered 2 kings.
The genius went to jail for plotting his father downfall and the strong was murdered. The hunchback had 22 Diplo, 24 Stewardship, 14 Martial and 20 Intrigue.

Now i don't care about those traits (Genius, Quick, Attractive, Strong) i only marry my heir to someone with the best prestige, stewardship and intrigue that i can find. And also try to find good wifes for the rest of them. And the education is much more important IMO.

I have never seen anything to suggest this. Anyway, didn't they say there are no genetics, because it's too easy to game the system to get supermen?

I have been trying to breed the genious trait into my line for almost 200 years, in 2 seperate games with zero success. Since i never get the trait on my heir, it's always dependent on the mother. However i did notice some of my close relatives started to get genious children, and the odd thing was, that in both cases, the father had no trait, but the mother was "Attractive" or whatever it's called.
So I'm wondering, if the combination of a possible "genious" line Ie.

Mother is Genious
Father has no traits

Child with no traits marries "attractive" woman.
-> their children has a high chance of genious.

This is just a very loose theory that i havn't tested yet, but if others want to give it a go.....

In my experience children never get any of the genetic attributes of any of their parents. The chance of getting one or more of them should be higher the nearer in the family line to the "bearer" of the genetic attribute. As I said, perhaps the problem is that the chance (because it´s a chance, even if BOTH your parents are genius that only gives you far more chance of being a genius but does not guarantee it) given to get the genetic attributes of your ascendants is too low.

I did try the same thing with getting the Genius trait into my line, more than once marrying my ruler to someone with Genius/Quick. Now, it wasn't necessarily so that all their children had good traits (I seem to remember that only one of seven got it), but after I had stopped trying to breed in Geniuses and instead married "normal" princes and princesses (heh) for political reasons, I noticed that a number of the offspring had good traits anyways, even though neither parent had Genius.

Atavism, anyone?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atavism

Also, pretty sure I saw a segment on genetics in CK2 here somewhere, something about people having an 11-letter code representing their genetics, and each child inherits 5 from the dad, 5 from the mom and 1 at random. So that makes genetics very unpredictable compared to what you'd expect IRL.

I had the same problems until recently. I posted my observations here.

In short, if genetics are in the game then the traits of parents and maybe grandparents appear to have some impact (i.e. if you and/or your spouse have a +cogential trait, the chances of their offspring having +/- cogential traits is dependent on you/your spouses parents and possibly grandparents.)

My hunchback is a GOD at his martial skill. But yeah, in one generation, two out of my three children had physical deformities. Slow and hunchback.
