Question is in post title. Want to play Byzantium at peak efficiency and want to actually conquer the HRE this time. Who better to be the Holy Roman Emperor than the actual Roman Emperor? Did 1.8 and the League crap make it impossible?
Is it impossible to be an Orthodox HRE now?

I think if the religious league war ends in a stalemate and the Treaty of Westphalia event happens, I think it removes the religious requirements on being elected.

Connected question, if the protestants win the war is it also impossible to be a reformed emperor?
Yeah i had like 90% of the HRE being reformed (myself included) and i couldnt become emperor because there is no "Reformed League" which sucks balls. So you can only wait until the stupid war is over. Would be cool if they could add at least reformed as a viable option as they often appear in the HRE.
When the leagues form, keep a close eye on which one is more powerful once most of the major players have joined. Join the weaker side. When the Protestants challenge the Emperor, try your hardest to keep the WS between -50% and 50%, and as close to 0% as possible. The AI will eventually sign some minor peace deal or even a white peace, and you'll get a Peace of Westphalia and open yourself up to become the Emperor.
In my Reformed Prussia game I was even able to separate peace to take land from Lithuania once I was sure a Peace of Westphalia would happen.
All christians should have the option to challange the religious authority of the dominant faith. I had amlost every nation convert to not-catholic exept for the emporer (Austria with every province gone heretic) and Liege (Brandenburg sized). Catholics auto won and only Liege was an elector. Later on Austria collapsed to the constant rebellions and became protestant. Sweden became the emporer despite not being voted for. Liege got reduced to OPM status and remains catholic.
In real life the situation would have been much different. The princes would have most likely just tried to elect their own emporer if Austria had ignored reality for such a long time. Also a large non-catholic nation (like myself, a restored HRE Byzanium) would maybe try to force some 'peace of westphalia' treaty to open up emporership to himself or other nations of the same faith.

The easiest solution is to just play without AoW enabled. If you don't run the DLC, then it works pretty much exactly like it used to.
What? Who better to disband the HRE than the actual Roman Emperor. That's what you should be doing.

Seriously, it just feels wrong to be both the ERE and the Emperor of the HRE.
Since I have the servitude of the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, I'm the direct descendant of the Roman Empire, and I'm (if I manage to reclaim lost territory) a centralized state consisting of large swaths of territory uniting under one dominant monarch, I'm an Empire, that makes me all of: Holy, Roman, and Empire. Unlike the HRE.
So I have just as much a right to be the King of the Romans as I do to disband the pretenders.
Just because you have every right to pick up some rusted crown from the gutter and put it on your head, with the stench and grime and all that to boot, doesn't mean you should.
