I was preoccupied with HoI4, Stellaris and forum talking about Vic3 so I missed out on everything that happened after the Emperor update. I just read a few horrible postings/online articles about the last DLC, that’s it.

Is it worth spending some hours and shekels on the last update(s)? In my last campaign I had to deal with an unbalanced Austria on its rampage through the very same empire it ought to protect. Is it fixed yet?

Bluntly, nope. It just seems every update the problem moves to a different region. That Austria you mentioned is now stronger as the AI actively acts on Restoration of Union CBs, however the big issue is colonization. NA natives seem to be effectively owning ~90% of the continent by 1520-ish which is making colonization for some people difficult.

So now colonisation of NA is more war focused like Asia instead of chilled nation building? A pity as it’s a region I haven’t touched since forever. I remember having two exciting campaign there though, one with an Indian tribe and that whole federation stuff and another with Canada as released colony. Though the incredibly boring and repetitive mechanics of Mesoamerican tags killed my motivation.

Effectively, yes. There are still 1-3 province clusters you can still colonize, but if you're going to want a colonial nation to stay you're going to fight all the neighboring tribes for their land.

Game is by no means dead. You can check average player counts and notice that nothing changed over the least months/years. We just had an extremely disappointing release and the game is still in a horrible state, but patches have somewhat saved it. We are at the "its slowly getting better" state of the yearly "promise new mechanics-> add three versions of a copy of an existing button, increase average mana gain and add a new way to get 5% more discipline-> ignore feedback-> announce a few mission trees that likely bug out if you dont own all DLC since fallback options are a thing of the past -> ignore feedback-> awful release-> horrible communication, blame customers-> unplayable product-> write yearly apology-> delete yearly apology-> first bandaid fixes-> slowly getting better-> stop fixing anything the moment stuff barely works and is still unbalanced-> announce the next expansion-> promise doing better in the future-> not doing better in the future-> ignore community outrage about badly designed features and bugs" cycle

Hmm, so nothing much has changed. I hope EU5 will finally break up with the tradition of constantly adding countless free stuff instant mana buttons.

Ofcourse EU5 will be much better. Stellaris and HOI what you mentioned shows us great example of bugfree perfectly balance games. New one (EU5) will definitely be one of these gold nuggets.

As stated in an ongoing/separate thread about colonization issues in NA -- it is the "Look and Feel" of the Colonization period that is being ruined by the current design/algorithms and placement of tribes, but here's an even crazier fact, that in most all Normal/Ironman (or harder) plays of the game, you will see that 100% of native American tribes are rolling around with Cavalry and Artillery units by the mid-1500s, as if some unreal transport of horses (that didn't exist in NA) along with an export of Cavalry tactics had occurred, and as if native Americans started an early industrial revolution to smelt ore and start making cannons in the 1500s -- both of which are so off the mark in terms of Game Theme/Presentation of the Colonial period, that it just makes one wonder who botched this one at Paradox.

But why fight for trashy 5 dev woodland provinces in NA when one can instead fight for Mexican goldmines?

It’s not dead, somehow; but someone poisoned it shot it in the head and threw it in a river. There it’s floating, waiting for one more rasputin like revival when paradox will shove even more game breaking, unasked for content down its throat before it can finally shuffle off and die.

The problem with HOI4 is that it’s feature starved and abstracts things that shouldn’t be abstracted, like money, government, navy and airforce. The only functioning part of HOI4 is the land warfare.

In some ways, I think the new Subscription Model is ruining Paradox as a Game Studio (and Publisher). Consider how much more pressure they have now, to make anything on subscription "better" - and then rush to change things for the sake of change, because - if subs are paying, they need to see something new, all the time.

Imagine the "Pimp My Ride" show, except your car gets modded on a Subscription, instead of a single-task, so now the car shop just dreams up new stuff to mod into your car. Pretty soon, the Kitchen Sink is installed in your car, and you're scratching your head trying to figure out why all this unnecessary crap is inside your car.

I’m not aware of the maths behind it but I do get the feeling that it’s actually a little bit fairer than the purchase model. The key reselling cheese that abuses regional taxation systems and other socioeconomic differences around the globe is simply unfair. Having Steam demanding 30% fees while maintaining a monopoly is, at best, questionable. And also the frequent sale events are not free of a certain bad taste; I find it rather stressful being nudged by the marketing department.

Consequently it leads to thoughts like „if they’re now selling their product for almost a quarter of the price they sold it to me, and they’re doing it with all of their games, so this must be not an ad hoc reaction to the market development but an intentional and planned decision they make in advance“ or „is it justified to take any other factors into consideration that are not related to adequate costs of labour, manufacturing and distribution/transportation“.

To be honest, I don’t find the subscription model to be significantly better as I a see the underlying system of pricing as flawed or even dysfunctional.

I genuinely think that a full-on subscription model, where instead of buying anything(not even the base game) you pay for a full monthly access to a game that comes with all updates built-in would make sense

Having Steam demanding 30% fees while maintaining a monopoly is, at best, questionable.
Worth pointing out that the 30% is the market standard for a ton of things all across the board
Steam, PlayStation Store, Google Play Store, Apple Store, not to mention non-gaming stuff: 30% is also what goes to the company's pocket for things like YT's superchats & memberships, Twitch subscriptions for partners.
This isn't a good system by any means but almost everyone has had to abide by it anyways and make good with it as best as they can.
