Is EU4 currently still fun to play?

I've been without laptop for almost a month and thus missed ED and its accompanying patch. I've heard that you can't do manual exploration now and that vassal feeding is much harder now due to liberty desire. Is it still possible to expand a lot via other modes of expansion, or are you forced to expand more slowly?

"Is the game still fun to play" can't be answered by anyone other than yourself. If you're looking for new quick ways to expand, then I can't help you.
If you're not sure wether to buy the ED or not, then play the patch and see if the features in ED interest you.

Mod the liberty desire as it is simply ridiculous now. What makes it even worse is that AE is too high nowadays aswell, this combined with the entire continent entering in a coalition against you if you take 2 low country provinces is very stupid.

I personally modded AE values, AI behaviour regarding joining coalitions and the retarded liberty desire mechanic. In my opinion tuning these aspects down is much more fun, as you can't have wars otherwise (unless you want to wait 30-40 years after taking 2 provinces, it is plain stupid) and the game is very, very boring in peacetime.

They really need to add some peacetime mechanics if they insist on this current stupid state of AE/coalitions/vassals.

For my taste, it's better than ever. Liberty desire doesn't hinder my expansion at all, balance wise I'd say it's right on the spot. Exploration isn't something I've tried since my WC run, lol.

I'm biased, though, since Nation Designer basically reignited my interest, that's something I've been missing since day 1.

The game I played till a hotfixed screwed up the saves and the NIs (see insanely OP -20% tech cost); hence I scrapped it. Expansion rate of my 3PM was no worse than that of mighty Bohemia of 1.7.3.

Even with how AE and liberty desire is some nations are worse off in this regard than others.

Never been a better game. A bit harder right now to conquerer half the world as a OPM than it use to be, but you can still take 1/4 of the world and have a lot of different challenges. The new liberty mechanism really add a lot to the game.

I don't own El Dorado, but even without it I'm still having a lot of fun. I've gone from Castile->Spain in my last game to Gujarat in my current one, and they're both equally interesting games.

It's like we are playing different games. I just finished a ironman Poland save with the latest patch and DLC and had trouble with none of this. Not dismissing the fact that you did, but it just wasn't an issue and I expanded alot.

I'll echo what the others have said, whether you will like it we cannot say. But I sure do.

Depends. Singleplayer? No. The AI is HILARIOUSLY terrible at the game, relying on cheesy buffs and cheats ('lucky nations', navies can see 2 tiles away, etc) in order to even have a chance of surviving against humans. Plus, raid boss rebels (especially if you go over 100% overextension), which in my opinion were made so strong because AI nations simply cannot put up a fight.

Multiplayer is another can of worms entirely, and where this game honestly shines. Unfortunately, multiplayer requires a much slower and more patient game.

RotW still fun, HRE much less fun than ever because of the AE/Coalition and insane AI Suicide War bug/feature.

Liberty desire is manageable eventually , but it really sucks when you're an OPM.

I should specifcy my experience was in the HRE. To the person playing Poland, I assume you went east instead of west. It's not fun at all there, it forces you to AFK for 30-40 years with almost literally nothing to do.

Obviously I still find fun in it myself too, though there are pretty significant problems with it in some areas.

I have a lot of fun with EU4 but two things diminish that fun greatly:

1. Weak NIs. Why ever play an HRE nation that isn't Austria or Prussia? Pretty much all the other unique NIs are just watered down weak versions of Prussia/Austrian ideas.

2. All that matters is military strength. It's way easy to line your back row with artillery, and that's all you can do with money. If there was a way to put money in to more things like funding military academies for discipline/military tradition that'd be great, but there's just no reason to not pick up a tier 1 military country. Even the Netherlands just gets run down.
