Don't know how was it when it came out, because I spent most time playing Stelleris and HOI4, but right now, returning to CK2, I think it's a decent DLC. It helps to separate CK2 feudalism from EU4 absolutism - realm decisions are simply not yours alone to make.

It's really not more difficult. Except maybe for the discontent period after inheriting.

Which existed before Conclave too and still exists without Conclave as well.

The 2.5. patch lowered opinion bonuses across the board, added "opinion of predecessor" bonus/malus.
That's what truly is making the game "harder", but thats a patch feature not a DLC one.

I daresay that with or without Conclave doesn't really matter.
Conclave gives you a few tools that can help or hinder your progress, but it really doesn't make the game harder.

It makes playing a vassal more interesting and streamlines the education system a bit. As a liege lord I haven't worked out how to keep the council under control but I think that's my fault for missing some steps I haven't learned yet.

As a nomad/tribal you really can't, so use it as dip modifier bait and switch then bribe some old farts or terribles to pass a vote and then replace them. As long as you are one of these government forms the council is going to do nothing but annoy you...

Once you get settled into a more modern government there are a couple of advantages to the council having a bit of power (empowered + war dec override). It allows you to force realm peace to stop vassals from ruining your internal borders and being a council member generally keeps a vassal out of factions. At least after the initial period of discontent with a new ruler as they can't start factions while the council is contented and can only join if forced by a favor.

The only real issue I have with conclave is how actually near useless favors from other rulers are. Outside of the occasional situation where forcing acceptance of a marriage offer matters they are pretty useless in my experience. (I can't get my ERE liege to attack for my claim in their de jure area? wtf?)

From what I've been seeing, your love or hate for Conclave seems to depend on whether you mostly RP or mostly powergame & blob. If you are an RPer, you will probably like it, since there is more stuff to do when you arent at war, & you actually feel like there are more people around you helping or plotting against you. If you are a powergamer & just want to destroy everyone or take over the world you probably wont like it as Conclave puts more obstacles in your path.

Eh, there are RP issues with 2.5 and Conclave as well. Mostly related to calls to arms (which is being fixed), tyranny, Council behavior, education and defensive pacts.

I can't think of any improvements for roleplaying with conclave except maybe education being harder.
