I loved the HOI2 tech system, although it was a little over encumbered and until Armageddon it was all nation-specific (certain tech teams for certain nations)
well, I did (and still do) appreciate this :) One could argue on the low level of some teams but the system itself was interesting, for me

A game that would be radically different while remaining still an EU style game would be almost a complete remake of every major system. NOTHING execpt for the engine itself should be brought over. Every concept should be re-designed.
some examples ?

EU2 (...) and lost its appeal VERY quickly.
strange that I juste made another game yesterday :D

EU3 has its own flaws. Despite being atrociously buggy (even after all the patching),
 do you mean it ?

EU3s 2 other major flaw was shared by most Paradox games in some form (including EU2) - The first is Badboy/Reputation/Stability -- While there NEEDS to be a mechanic to keep people from going on conquoring sprees all the time, the system currently employed is so horribly portrayed that it alone almost caused me not to purchase NAx (seeing as they did nothing to fix it).
any proposition ? :)

The other major flaw in the series is the lack of anything substantial to do during peacetime (and just barely more during wartime). - CK didn't suffer from this as much, nor did Vicky, but EU2, EU3, and Hoi2 all suffered from it enough to make up for that..
well, I'm busy enough during wartimes, thanks, now maybe the management during peacetime is a bit dull in HoI/DD, but you'd recognize that WW2 was not precisely a peace time. Now for EU, you have some colonization to do and also keeping the merchants in the CoT and watching any opportunity to win the next war against your neighbours or prevent them to win their wars (yes I like paying the ennemies of my ennemy :p ). Being unable to do four things at the same time, It is well enough for me.

There needs to be MANY more buildings to build
isn't there enough ? It already has been discussed ad nauseam but, you, who is complaining to have nothing to do during peacetime, would surely enjoy building all these buildings !
All your money should go to your bank, and the concept of interest should be dropped
there are interests to be gained ? and nobody told me !
during war time you should be able to assign your units to formations, and (like in HoI2) order your units to "dig in" when defending.
at last a proposition :)
So, to apply to Rome, should we consider the roman ability to build wood fortifications during campaigns. What of the other cultures ? It seems to me a bit specific to the roman army...

Yes there are minor differences between EU2 and its spin offs. The POP system in vicky is a great example. It was still a minor difference however and the core idea of the game is still the same. The furthest from EU2 was CK with its dynastic simulation, but even that was only a medium sized difference.
As said, words like 'minor' and 'radical' are highly subjective, but I would strongly disagree that the POP system was minor. It changed the whole dynamic of the game and affected everything.

First of all, you might say that culture clashes are already present in EU, but POPs introduced magnitude and allowed you to deal with it in a multitude of ways (more tolerant government, perhaps). POPs also determined manpower, and your manpower's culture was important and thus its numbers as well. How much manpower of your national culture do you put into industry or in the army?

Then there's migration, a huge factor for American countries and the Old World who bled people through their ports.

Well, you get where I'm going. I love Vicky to bits. And we haven't even went into the vastly complex ideological system (POP influenced as well) and politics.

The problem is how do you measure 'difference'. Should Rome scrap the whole province map system as well? Of course, I do hope for a unique game as well, but I wouldn't be too precise in my expectations, since it may well dampen my experience of the game.

There were some major flaws in both EU2 and EU3 -- EU2 was too historically accurate, was out of date (engine wise) even before it was released (which ended up being a mixed curse- it helped pick up some sales, while hurting its chances with the graphics babies), and lost its appeal VERY quickly.
I actually found myself shuffling between Paradox games, going between EU2 to Vicky and to CK (now I have EU3 and HOI2 as well but no EU2) and that way kept each game quite fresh every time I find a new nation to play or a new way to play it.

I once felt that I wanted more and cheaper buildings as well. But then I learnt how to manage my cash and found that it's quite a lot more fun when you control cashflow carefully and save up for the reward, whether a new province colonised or a new structure built, rather than constantly trying to keep track of which provinces has already built what frantically. But that's prolly just my personal preference.

As for digging in, I'm not familiar enough about military history in EU's covered timeline and how big digging in had an effect on warfare.

cheers

One thing I hope is different about this game compared to EUIII is the ease of controlling provinces. The ancient world was a lot more bloody on average than the late middle ages and Renaissance. It makes sense that territory acquisition is hard in EUIII considering this, requiring many wars and careful diplomacy.

In the ancient times might made right. That's not to say that provinces should just bend over without rebellion and other various issues, but it should be noted that Roman expanded as rapidly as it did for a reason!

EU2 (...) and lost its appeal VERY quickly.

I couldn't pass this one either. EU2 lost appeal quickly? I played the damn thing for years. And I don't mean years as in two. I mean since the day it was released until the beginning of summer 2007. Talking about quick appeal loss :) It stole countless hours of my life, resulted in a loss of sleep, part of my income and hurt relations with my wife. Don't talk bad about my baby. And I don't mean baby as in my wife :D
