So I am wanting to play the game and unlock achievements. How ever the auto save system makes it impossible for me to play the game on iron man. As I like to turn off auto save or set it to auto save at the end of the hear.

Iron man is set every month. That like 10 seconds on my pc at fastest speed. Then my game freezes. Sure the being it find the auto saves are quick and fast but each auto save seems to take longer and long. To the point the auto saves are taking more time to auto save then what I am able to play.

Giving us more options to when the auto save would be nice or no auto save and a single manual save. If this is not an option then fix the auto save system so it does not take a year to auto save. ((yes I was being overly dramatic. IT was to make a point.)) The auto saves take to long to save. Like their a bug in the system or a memory leak build into the auto save.

Yes, the autosave frequency definitely make the game less fun because the game keeps locking up so often, and during that time it's not possible to issue commands. The issue still persists on an SSD. I think every 6 months + every time war is declared would be much better.

What are your system specs? Mine are as follows. Pentium G3220 3Ghz, 16GB RAM, 1TB WD HDD and a 100/100 connection. In late game the game runs at FPS in their teens, but saving is fairly quick, a few seconds. Early-mid game it is almost not noticeble.

Totally agree with this, I tried out ironman for achievements and nope I can't do it. It's like playing a game with massive lag every few seconds (each time it saves obviously).

I think that tying achievements to ironman remains one of the worst decisions of Paradox. Just make it one of the achievements: "win game on ironman".
NEIN NEIN NEIN. Everyone needs to play vanilla without mods and saving and reloading is the greatest cheat of all time. We need to go back to the game boy era and abolish saving and pausing the game altogether. GIT GUD NOOBS

Anyway I gave up. OP just go and get a steam achievement manager. Trust me, it will be liberating.

I don't care about achievements but I enjoy ironman because it prevents savescumming. I'm a bit weak willed and savescum if possible despite the fact that it ruins the feeling that you accomplished something.

A bronzeman mode without achievements but autosave on exit/every year would be good great imo.

I think it is a great idea! it means your achievemnts are worth something. especialy if you're doing a more difficult one.
Achievements should be there to show off and test your skills. Not allowing mods that can make a game easier and not alowing savescumming perfectly fits with that.

Ironman Modes are not a new thing. They have been done decades ago.
And setable save intervalls are one of the first things we learned not to apply.

For starters, you can still savescum back to the last savegame simply by killing the game via task manager. I admit to have done it a few times, to deal with serious missclicks. Or get my shoot at stuff like the Ministery of Culture, because *of course* I spent the minerals before day 17.

Increasing the autosave intervall from anything less then once per month is not an option.

Indeed making archeivements easy to get would go agaisnt the very purpose of Archievements.

on this topic i would like a load to iron man option. I use the more AI mod but that upsets the FA sapwn. Sometimes - sometimes 4.
so every new game i start i zoom right in to my home system, i have to use console to switch to observe (then just click contacts and organise by tech) This shows me if the FA have spawned or if i need to restart my game again.
Loading to iron man that would from that load on lock out the console would be very nice

Ironman absolutely DOES NOT prevent save scumming. Makes it slightly harder, that's all.

Except that none of the achievements is about skill, only about time invested. And a bunch of them are purely about luck.

Increasing the autosave interval from anything less then once per month is not an option.

Why is that not an option?

I agree with OP. We need options for saving interval like in EU4.

By several reasonable definitions, yes, savescumming is a pretty massive cheat.

Don't believe me? Ask your friends to let you rewind a turn in a tabletop game.
Ironman absolutely DOES NOT prevent save scumming. Makes it slightly harder, that's all.
It does, however, require you to act in a way that makes you completely conscious that you are breaking the rules :)

One purpose of Ironman mode is to avoid cheatcodes from being used.
"Loading into Ironman" defeat one of the purposes of Ironman mode. You indeed just explained it how you would defeat the cheat protection.

Why is that not an option?
As you said, it is already possible to savescum. But the window of opportunity is limited due to the 1 month autosave. At best it would be 30 days, most likely a whole lot less then that.
That is the savescumming security "autosave on leave and regulary" gives you.

Increasing the Intervall Span (that is what this is about) would only make that save scumming easier and allow wider ranges of effect. 1 month is the minimum, sensical intervall. Especially considering that the resource and science simulations are running on a 1 month intervall too.

If you want the Archievements, the limits of Ironman mode are part of the difficulty of getting the Archievements.
If you do not want the Archeivements, then Ironman mode serves no purpose for you.

Except that none of the achievements is about skill, only about time invested. And a bunch of them are purely about luck.

And a thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters over a thousand years will most likely recreate the complete works of William Shakespeare. Yes, you can accomplish anything by investing an unlimited amount of time and no real skill. But most people don't have the patience for that, so they instead develop skill so it takes less than an unlimited amount of time.

A little bit of free advice, you're trying to convince the developers to make a change. Diminishing the strategy game they've created to one of 'only time invested' and 'pure luck' will convince them you just don't understand it and so are a bad person to take advice from.

You can make backup copy of your save every 3 months, every 6 month, every year or whatever. ALT+TAB, copy, paste, profit.

They don't have to listen to me. They can listen to whoever is in charge of EU4, unless these people also don't understand anything about "strategy".

They don't have to listen to me. They can listen to whoever is in charge of EU4, unless these people also don't understand anything about "strategy".

Okay, let me go over that conversation with you

Wiz: Hey Martin Anward, you were project lead on EU4 from Art of War up until Common Sense right?
Martin Anward: Possibly, the guy writing this dialogue got tired of searching after about 5 minutes so he only found out that I came in after the first couple of expansions and left to head up the Stellaris project.
Wiz: Great, well, if you weren't locked into EU4's Iron Man options, how would you handle Iron Man on an entirely new project.
Martin Anward: I'd make it save once a month.
Wiz: Oh, good to know. Hey, this guy on the forum thinks that none of the achievements are about skill because any one could be had with sufficient levels of luck and time investment.
Martin Anward: Hey, man, there are a lot fans with a lot of opinions out there. You can't let yourself get caught up in that, it's like I always say "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong."
Wiz: That's pretty good, do you mind if I steal that?"
Martin Anward: Is it really stealing if we're the same person?

And then it does a dramatic pan out that reveals that this low light show is really just Wiz talking to his own reflection.

I agree with the op, ironman is unplayable with the frequency of auto saving, once a year would be fine. I only got 2 years into a ironman game and gave up due to the lag (auto saving) if the game didnt have 2 pause just to save it wouldnt bother me so much.
