I have wonderful news for you. Instead of choosing Ironman, go to game options and disable autosaving and you will be playing on the best Ironman Mode you will ever see. This way you can never savescum and the only way the game saves is when you exit the game or opt to save it manually.

Nope. Because :
A - If I have the option to do manual saves, then the temptation will be strong to simply save before I try some stupid stunt ("just in case there is a power outage, you know...").
B - Even If I only save before stoping a game, I will still have the possibility to go back to that "end of session" save. Which will probably screw up my enjoyment of the game, esp if I have to replay a big chunk, but I will probably do it anyway
C - Especially since I tend to stop my session just before I do something big. "OK, time to sleep, I'll start this war first thing tomorrow"

Believe me, I didn't wait for games with autosave to savescum (I might have started with Ultima3 and "F19 stealth fighter" on my Apple IIc, back in the 80'?)
Ironman removes the possibility (unless I do some very ugly stuff like ctrl-alt-del out of the game, but it's easier for me to avoid such extreme stuff, esp. if all I have to return to is an autosave where I'm already screwed anyway). I won't do Ironman for every game (certainly not for campaign RPGs where losing means "start over from scratch and replay the same stuff for 40 hours"), but for games where losing and dealing with the consequences is part of the fun, it's a nice safety net against my weak, weak will... ;)

Ironman does not remove savescumming. It enables the ability to get steam achievements and disables manual saves. You can end process and resume from the last save point just like any other game mode. Infact as it currently stands in Hearts of Iron 4's Ironman mode, you can save scum much easier cause the game does not save when you exit and come back in, it will load you back to the last autosave point. You really are being pedantic here though. You are trying to paint a very narrow situation for the sake of arguing. Turn off Ironman, increase autosave intervals, and get some willpower and stop complaining about Ironman when you don't even need it to play how you are playing. Theres literally 20 mods out there that would be absolutely amazing to play with and you are blocking yourself based purely on your lack of willpower.

Okaaaaaay. I tried to be friendly and defuse the tension despite your antagonistic attitude, but apparently that doesn't work, so I'll be blunt.

So, let me shoot down some assumptions :
* I don't play for achievements, so I don't think playing Ironman prevents me from using mods (although I don't use them, it's purely because I tend to prefer vanilia in my games, even heavily modded ones like Kerbal Space Program. Maybe It's lazyness when I have to shovel through a few thousands of them to find the nugget that might enhance my game and not break anything. especially since I tend to play at a relaxed pace, so mods breaking down due to an update would be a pain, too. That said, if you have some good ones to suggest, I'm all ears)

* I didn't complain about the "ironman save problem". Not once. I know it's the topic, and it can be confusing to tell people apart in this kind of free-for-all, especially noobs like me, but my only participation to this thread was saying that ironman can be useful to people who don't care about achievements (like me). So I'm not complaining here, just saying "hey, I like ironman, don't diss it please."

* More importantly, I didn't speak about some hypothetical, never-happening situation. What I described is the problem I face in every game I play where I don't Ironman : at some point, I will very likely crack and savescum one way or another. Turning on Ironman is my way to challenge myself out of this mindset, to "make it official". I know it can be avoided (ironically, F19, one of the games I used as an exemple of early savescuming as a kid, was an ironman game with autosave every time your pilot failed a mission and was killed/captured. I cut down the power when my plane was shot down. VERY stupid, I know...), but as I said, it's easier for me nowadays to avoid using "extreme" mesures like killing the process, rather than simply using the tools the game gives me in normal play. Like I said, "I selected ironman, so it's official". So yeah, maybe it's silly (but hey, every and all humans are silly creatures anyway), but ironman IS useful for me.

Oh, and when I comment about my lack of willpower during games, it's a self-depreciating, good natured joke; When you do it, it's an insult. Please don't insult me.

Have a nice day,

Kardwill

Edit : toned down a little to be less belligerent. I shouldn't reply immediately when a post annoys me

So where did we land in the end? There was no comment I saw from Paradox on the subject, and since I'm new to Paradox forums I do not know if this is normal behaviour or not for them (hope it is not of course and they do consider all posts on their forums). Is there any hope that this might be changed?

No. We've had this discussion about achievements and Iron Man at least a million times on these forums. On the one hand, we have the crowd who don't care what other people do with their games, and, on the other, we have the crowd whose issues make them judge their self-worth by how many pixel badges other people have and how they got them.

PDox sided with the latter crowd.

Ironman prevents you from save scumming because it uses only one save, not because it overwrites it every single in-game month. You could allow player to change intervals to 2, 6, 12 months and he would have even less reasons to reload. Easy fix.

YES, yes a 1000 times yes. I was looking to see if there is a way to edit it before hand to save LESS often :D.

I love Achievements and try to get them when I can. Play in Iron man move ok, one save you bet (I think I have only reloaded once in the time I have played), Auto save o.k BUT not every month.

I'd like to make it once a year or at best every 6 months. I'd be happy with it saving before I quit but It bugs the *blank* out of me that every few seconds (I play on the fast setting) it's stop, save for a sec or 2, go and then repeat.
