I have wonderful news for you. Instead of choosing Ironman, go to game options and disable autosaving and you will be playing on the best Ironman Mode you will ever see. This way you can never savescum and the only way the game saves is when you exit the game or opt to save it manually.
Nope. Because :
A - If I have the option to do manual saves, then the temptation will be strong to simply save before I try some stupid stunt ("just in case there is a power outage, you know...").
B - Even If I only save before stoping a game, I will still have the possibility to go back to that "end of session" save. Which will probably screw up my enjoyment of the game, esp if I have to replay a big chunk, but I will probably do it anyway
C - Especially since I tend to stop my session just before I do something big. "OK, time to sleep, I'll start this war first thing tomorrow"
Believe me, I didn't wait for games with autosave to savescum (I might have started with Ultima3 and "F19 stealth fighter" on my Apple IIc, back in the 80'?)
Ironman removes the possibility (unless I do some very ugly stuff like ctrl-alt-del out of the game, but it's easier for me to avoid such extreme stuff, esp. if all I have to return to is an autosave where I'm already screwed anyway). I won't do Ironman for every game (certainly not for campaign RPGs where losing means "start over from scratch and replay the same stuff for 40 hours"), but for games where losing and dealing with the consequences is part of the fun, it's a nice safety net against my weak, weak will...
