I almost want to think theres something wrong with your computer if you are noticing ironman saves in stellaris. I have 2 systems that barely meet system requirements and the first thing I noticed with stellaris compared to ck2/eu4 was that the ironman saving process was almost nonexistant. The fact that you are highlighting an almost invisible thing in this title kinda makes no sense to me.
I'm recording my game so you can see it and tell me if that is not annoying: http://www.youtube.com/seePyou

I also get pauses when playing in Ironman when it autosaves. Every month the game pauses for a second to save. It doesn't stutter like this at any other time, only when it says its saving. I don't see why the game needs to save like this. Just make it save on quit or during key moments (founding a colony, end of a battle and wars). Once a month is pretty ridiculous.

It needs to be handled differently, at the VERY LEAST, the game should not freeze when it is saving: the most jarring element of this is that I'm interrupted from moving around, I'm navigatint he map and it just breaks I want to select a ship and it is not letting me. Save all you want, but let me have control of my UI and of the camera so that I can see click on ships or planets and go to the planets and navigate and have the empire screen pop up or anything I want, EVEN IF I CANNOT issue orders.
By all means, stop time for the game to do what you need to do, but be gentle about it, do not freeze the game entirely while saving!

Annoys me too. Not to the point of "I'll never play this game again, - 11/10, PDox killed my baby!", not even close, it's barely a blip of a freeze when it happens. It's just that it seems to time itself so it happens every single time I'm trying to click on something :D.

I can just sit back and watch for ages while waiting for my research /production queue to finish and then, just as I need to intervene, BAM!, save...o_O

I know, Murphy hates me :D

Still, a "no save except on quit" would be awesome.

I've got 2 SSDs in RAID0 (the crappy windows one) and I've never even noticed the save happening on ironman. But I'll believe it. Not sure why they don't a separate thread that doesn't block the game ui / logic and asynchronously copies the save onto the disk. I'm just going to assume it's not that simple and there's some engine-related problem because they would have done it if it were that trivial.

I have a pretty decent system, and it auto saves every few seconds. Don't see how its related to system specs

Interesting are you on max speed?

Does speed even matter with ironman mode saves?

To answer to the latest post, what would be the point playing ironman if you already know that you will try to trick the save system? The current saving system seems to be made for avoiding player to do that, but why should the ironman mode should lower the experience of people who really want to play in ironman?

To ironsum some of the more irritating achievements. Especially important if playing a EU4 monarchy as MPs being subject is RNGesus too much can be lethal for tech levels worse than Ottoman. Also, somehow getting generals with 0 siege pips when you have 90+army tradition? Lol NOPE.

I'm recording my game so you can see it and tell me if that is not annoying: http://www.youtube.com/seePyou

Complains about speed of game. Admits after the fact they are streaming on medium specs. Some processes like writing text to a file will take longer when you are also writing screen caps to file at the same time. I'm a little lost as to how you thought this even remotely should not be the case.

Also if you have cloud saves enabled and are streaming live, yeah...

First of all, I do not stream live. I record on a Samsung Pro 850.
Second, I do not know what you mean by medium specs. If you are talking about the specs of my computer I mentioned previously, I have no idea how that is medium specs.
The game is saved on an M.2 SSD and the recording is happening on the Samsung, so again, it should not be like this.

However, despite everything, I tried a new Ironman where I did not record it, nor was I saving to cloud.
The result was the same pause. I am curious to see what you think I did wrong now.

The saving in stellaris is NOTHING like the saving in CK2. Theres no history files to save and the save game doesn't bloat at all. The OP is probably just using cloud saves with slow internet or something. The autosaves in this game are instantaneous. That was the first thing I cheered about when coming from eu4/ck2....ironman saves are instant.
This has been my experience as well. Playing Ironman in Stellaris has been a wonderful experience after EU4 and particularly CK2. I do not notice the auto save at all - as in I don't even register it happening. And I'm on a decidedly mid-range computer (although my boot drive is an SSD and that's where saves go unless you've messed with the location of My Documents) and I almost always play 1000 star galaxy.

But I don't use cloud saves either - that's always slow!

It autosaves every month to prevent you from save scumming your way out of gnarly situations. What is the point of ironman if you can reload a save if an anomaly goes the wrong way?

Ironman prevents you from save scumming because it uses only one save, not because it overwrites it every single in-game month. You could allow player to change intervals to 2, 6, 12 months and he would have even less reasons to reload. Easy fix.

Is it just me or is Iron man mode saving every few seconds ? Its getting a little annoying
This is what ironman is supposed to do?

Ironman saves in Stellaris are a lot better/smoother than in EU4.

You can play Ironman with mods (but no achievements ) which some of us like to do.

There is no point to playing ironman mode without achievements.
Of course there is : playing without being tempted to savescum when you get a bad result or when you realise you did something stupid.

Of course, you could simply ignore the ability to savescum, but I'll be frank, the temptation is often too strong when my heir just died in CK2, only leaving his drooling inbred cousin as my next character ^^

The game is more tense when I know I simply CANNOT revert to an earlier save, and I have to roll with the bad stuff. Makes sense in Paradox games, where you often can recover or at least try to live through the consequences. And with Ironman, I can't chicken out of it :)

I have wonderful news for you. Instead of choosing Ironman, go to game options and disable autosaving and you will be playing on the best Ironman Mode you will ever see. This way you can never savescum and the only way the game saves is when you exit the game or opt to save it manually.
