If it helps you feel better, I've encountered the same exact issue. This morning and this afternoon it was working perfectly and now Ironman mode cannot be enabled as of an hour or so ago. Tried reinstalling, deleting the EU4 documents folder. Another thing I've noticed is that it kinda "hangs" on the "creating checksum" at startup.

I'm also having this problem...the checksum is correct (0ef1) but Ironman is still disabled. I did a full reinstall (even deleted the Paradox folder under My Documents) and it didn't work.
On the Steam Community, some servers seems to be down.

Same problem. All of us posting this within minutes means it is certainly the steam servers. Patience, friends.
I now have this problem. Cannot load old saves. Cannot start new games in ironman.
It started when I was playing a game and it paused telling me "Ironman needs access to steam to play, steam is not connected. Refresh or exit to menu" steam was disconnected for some reason so I exited to menu, exited the game, and restarted steam. Steam didn't connect right away, made me enter my password again. The second time it connected. When I tried to launch euiv it told me that "my game was not synched to the cloud" or something and asked me to either cancel or play anyway. I said play anyway and my ironman was now disabled.

I have deleted the mydocuments folder, as well as the folder that contained my cloud save backups. In game I viewed the cloud and deleted all my cloud saves manually (at this point I don't care about the games as I wasn't doing well in them, I just want to be able to start new games in ironman)

I tried re-enabling both steam and euiv through windows firewall.
I made sure my steam ports were forwarded through my router.
I've tried disabling Conquest of Paradise and re-enabling.
Nothing seems to work. I am unhappy.

As someone said in a earlier post, it's Steam issue and not a game issue. We just have to wait until Steam fixes whatever is broken. Re-installing game wont do anything.
Nothing makes you realize how often Steam goes down like playing a game that requires Steam to be constantly up. I can't play any Ironman at the moment, saved OR new.
Or it is a Paradox issue with the checksums. I notice that the game pauses a loooooooong time at that step. Who keeps the servers with the checksum info, Valve or Paradox? Anybody awake in Sweden yet?
Hey guys, I haven't played the game in a week and I've suddenly developed the same problem. I've also tried all the above solutions with no results so I guess I"m in the same boat haha...ugh
And as Lucifero said, I too feel dirty starting a non-ironman game lol. Well, since there are no achievements for an Indian nation, time to united India in the meanwhile

It's not just EU 4 - there are a number of games that have their online component disabled right now (several FPS's and RTS's can't matchmake). SteamStatus (www.steamstat.us) shows 2 of 56 US servers offline, so I suspect that this is the current problem.
My bet is they brought their moneymaking servers online (Steam Store and their software download servers) first, and are still working on getting the online gaming servers back up.
I have updated my post above with further developments.
Long story short, firewall fix only lasted for a few days, problem still persists.
Do you really believe that reconfiguring the firewall to fix this problem? You just got to the point where it worked by itself and did not need to reconfigure the firewall.
If you run the client EU4 without launching Steam client initially, you will see the same error. Yes, without a steam cloud you can not run ironmod, but it shows that the autonomous and online modes cause the exact same error - "Ironman mode needs EU4 to be unmodified and validated"
This is a bug of the game client. He not correctly identifies the checksum.
We are investigating this issue to see if there is anything we can do, or if it is a problem on Steams end. But do I assume correctly if I assume that you can't access any cloud based services?
I can see my saved games, I just can't play them. EU4 says that my game is modded or not validated.
