That's kind of fitting with the lore, actually. Most merc companies don't last long.

They also don't start well-equipped (Priam Company and the Harbingers being so much an aberration), and the stores don't have unlimited equipment for sale most places I've stopped :) I actually love the feel, it reminds me a whole lot of my NetHack runs. I mean, those early missions where you find out there's actually two lances on the mission and one has a Wolverine or a Griffin (or both) and there's no vehicles to fill out the numbers? That's like the gnomes with wands in the mines ;)

. . . and now I have flashbacks.

......and so ends the less than illustrious career of Viking's Marauders. Although I didn't completely run out of cash, it was abundantly clear that I was on a trajectory to bankruptcy. I was only 2 months away from becoming bankrupt, was only able to field two mechs (& pretty weak ones at that) & had all my best Mechwarriors confined to the Medbay. I just couldn't see any way out of the hole I was in. Hopefully my new run-through will be more successful. My biggest mistakes today were (a) failing to prevent the escape of an assassination target, (b) taking on a 2 skull mission when I only had 1 skull's worth of mechs.....when I saw the Thunderbolt, Hatchetman & Catapult, I knew it was time to bug out, even if it meant a bad-faith withdrawal, (c) trying to take on a lance containing 2 Firestarters. It pretty much went downhill from there. Just getting (a) correct would probably have saved me.

Anyway, lets hope my next run-through goes much better. I am already learning a lot from last time. My Jenner got knocked down then targeted by the entire OpFor, but managed to scrape through that turn. So the moment I got the mech stood up, I ejected the pilot. That way I was easily able to recover & repair the mech. I also now have 6 months worth of cash in the kitty, so hopefully that will give me much more room to maneuver.

Was that two months in the sense that you had enough spare C-Bills to pay twice, or only once and then go bankrupt next? Because if it was the former then you could have straightened it out I think. Any pilots that only took one wound would heal up in 20-ish days by default (if they were down 2 health then yeah that wouldn't be viable either), and you probably could repair up a pair of mechs in a month or so, to have a full lance. Do that while travelling to a one or even half star planet, and spend time on lower-end contracts for a while to build back up.

Also one thing that I imagine people might forget (I sometimes do) to take advantage of - mech parts and unused full chassi are a great source of emergency income. That Spider you avoid using like a plague? That's ~200k C-Bills right there. From what I looked before partial mech completions are 30-40k on early light chassi. Ask yourself, are you going to use those Locusts that are slowly building up? If not, sell them. Hell, after some time playing you probably build up dozens of small lasers, machineguns, SRM2s, various ammo bins and jump jets. Even if you use those, you'll probably have more than you need soon enough. So sell, sell, sell...

(Sending that Jenner to be melted down into razors after I got myself a Firestarter was cathartic... and turned a disaster of a mission in a profitable one)

I mean 1 more payment, then bankrupt at the next payment Two of my best pilots were out for over 30 days due to their run in with 2 Firestarters, & I couldn't hire another pilot without the danger of going bakrupt even quicker.

I had already "trimmed the fat" by selling off all non-essential mechs & dismissing all but my core Mech-warrior staff.

Quick question guys.

I'm getting ready for my first Flashpoint mission.

Do I have to just accept the mission before the time runs out or get to the system before the time runs out?

Thanks
AG

Both. I had exactly 12 days travel / 12 days before expiry on what I thought would be my first Flashpoint, but alas it was too late.

Not done a Flashpoint yet, but I *think* you need to get to the system in time.
You do, but they usually don't expire for like 150 days or something. Plenty of time.
If you miss it don't worry, it'll pop up again later.

You do indeed need to arrive to the System the day prior to the FLASHPOINT expiring. In other words you indeed can not arrive the same day as the day it expires.

But once you arrive to the Planet, select the FLASHPOINT and agree to conduct the FLASHPOINT, it populates to your Contract Listing and if I understand my experience correctly, it will sit there past the time it would have expired.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

821 Days Remaining, and my best lance is now Grasshopper, TDR-5SS, SHD-2D, and a GRF-1S.

I also have a bunch of my other favorites just lying around idle: Kintaro, SHD-2H, WVR-6R, Hunchie (4G so far), Hatchetman, Firestarter.

I played the original ALOT and the career mode took me by surprise. You just don't remember how vulnerable the stock light mechs are and how much of a b*gger the random factor of the mission creator can be.

Three abortive starts on ironman and now just about on a roll having got a lucky pickup of a Firestarter when I had three salvage choices. I've now cornered a Kintaro on an assassinate mission which should deliver the missing piece to upgrade my lance. This is with three pieces after 50 days - playing with 5 or more is pretty impressive.

One thing that might be good is to ramp up the # of pieces with mech weight - so 3 for a light, 4 for medium, 5 for a heavy and 6 (or 8?) for an assault.

If anyone is having trouble and you don't mind watching me play, I have a "furypoint" hardest possible flashpoint career going...

A lot of what makes things easier at the start is changing loadouts for a lot more armour.
