@LoneStar Prussian

On the bright side, you're in Ukraine itself! The Russians must not be able to take many more of those beatings you handed down to them in Poland.

Chapter VIII: Battle on the Ice

"It seems history repeats itself. Centuries ago, our Teutonic Ancestors fought and died on this barbaric soil, now we are forced to do so again." -Leutnant Alban Fischer

----------------------------------------------

December 1st - December 15th, 1914

German Soldiers of the Prussian North Army rest in their trenches as offensive operations in the North came to an end. The Southern-Eastern Front would be where the real fighting occurred in the Winter of 1914.
The relatively quiet months of Autumn - October and November, had finally passed away and things were the next great Austro-German Offensive into the East was coming. For most of the November, the Austrians in the South had been building up their forces, waiting for the Germans to arrive and help them drive back the Russians. In early October, the Russian Bear was kicked out the borders of the Habsburg Empires after the Battle of Fours ended in Russian Defeat. The fields of Tarnopol were free of rampaging Cossacks and the streets of Przemysl, while battered, were in save hands again. In fact, the Russians could no longer target the city, as Russian Poland was now under German Occupation. The German Empire was having even more success up north, where both Lithuania and Latvia of the Baltic had been secured from the Tsar. Eastern White Russia was also taken, and hopefully by the end of the new offensive, all of Belarus would be under German Control. If Belarus and the main objective of the offensive, Eastern Ukraine, fell to the Central Powers, the entire Russian War Effort could be broken. Already cries for peace from the underground Soviets were being realized to, the whole rotten structure of the Russian Tsardom could come crashing down after all! If this new 'Teutonic Offensive' were to succeed in full, Russia would not survive past 1916, that is, if everything went according to plan.

You see, if the offensive does succeed, the gateway to Kiev, by extension Ukraine, Estonia, Finland, and Mother Russia itself would be opened in the summer. There was just one thing that could temporarily halt the Tsar's Destruction, and that was the leaked plans for a major Western Entente Offensive in Spring of 1915. German Intelligence has noticed the large Allied Buildup, they aren't building trenches, they're building weapons and preparing to invade. Their target? Most definitely the Fatherland, but to do so by going through Elsass-Lothringen would be crazy, and the French wouldn't be caught even making plans about invading Belgium. That left Italy, which wouldn't make that sense since that would push them into joining the Central Powers when they've been trying court favor with the Entente. There was another country...but no one has invaded it since the days of Napoleon. Switzerland. It is unthinkable, but perhaps the French and British would stoop so low that they invade the only nation in Europe that is actually neutral, and not leaning to one side or the other. In any case, the Winter Teutonic Offensive began on December 3rd 1914, what was to follow would shake the very core of the German Army forever.

British and Australian Commonwealth Soldiers arriving en mass in Toulon, France, December 1914.
"The scene in Warsaw, and what I presume behind German Lines...it was awful. As soon as I walked into the streets of the city, I knew something had gone terribly wrong." -Czcibor Dubicki, Polish Resident of Warsaw after seeing hundreds of German Dead arrive in the city. The Teutonic Offensive proved not to live up to it's mighty name, for all across the Eastern Front, misfortune had befallen the German and Austrian Armies. The German Army on the morning of December 3rd, 1914, attacked Russian Positions at Pinsk, Sarny, and Rowne while the Austrians attacked Proskurov, Balti, and Kamenets-Podolsky. At first everything was going okay, that was until the situation at Sarny turned for the worst. Thousands of German Soldiers stumbled upon a slaughter house waiting to claim new victims. While numerically equal, and technologically superior, the Russians fought tooth and nail for the entrance into Ukraine.

What was supposed to be a minor quick battle turned into the first battle of its kind in the war, the Battle of Sarny. On the first day of fighting alone, 108,000 Germans went over the top, 70,000 never made it back, 9,000 arrived home broken and battered. It was the Single Worst Day in Prussian Military History, the day so many of Germany's Sons died in the Land of the Tsars. In the end, it was fitting in a twisted way to call it the Teutonic Offensive. The Teutonic Order suffered one of it's greatest military failures during the Battle on the Ice, it seems the German Army unknowingly re invited that wrath onto the Fatherland once more. Many lives were lost on that day, and those numbers would only rise as the Battle of Sarny continued. The Battle was not over, nor would it end anytime soon. Until then, men of the German and Russian Armies would only continue to paint the snow red with their own blood.

German Soldiers lay dead and frozen during the hellish Battle of Sarny, December 3rd, 1914.
As if the failures in Western Ukraine weren't already bad enough for the Kaiserreich, the colonial battlefields in Africa and the Far East were not going well. Not that the war was being won anyway, but major defeats were dealt to the German Empire. In Africa, the German Colonial Army in Deutsche-Südwestafrika finally was destroyed and captured by the British and South African Armies, the colony receiving the same fate as well on the Fifth of December. The Battle of Swakopmund effectively put an end to German Operations in southwest Africa. The German Colonial Army there also didn't have enough men to continue a guerrilla war against the British like in Deutsche-Ostafrika, nor did they have the jungles and mountains to defend from in Deutsche-Kameroon. This would now be the second German Colony to fall, the first being Deutsche-Togoland.

Far off to Deutsche-Qingdao (China), the German East Asian Squadron, which was just a battlegroup of 8 ships stuck in the East, attempted to make a breakthrough the Japanese Naval Blockade around the port and try to make it back to Germany. Need it be mentioned that this was not authorized by the German Colonial Garrison in Deutsche-Qingdao. The ships were of course beaten back into port, well, at least the ones that weren't sunk into the East China Sea. Not even one Japanese Ship was damaged, it had no effect. When the rest of the remaining ships were re-docked in Qingdao, all their Captains were imprisoned for disobeying orders, them being to stay in port. After that utter embarrassment, there was one more colonial battle going on, thankfully it had almost nothing to do with Germany, however it happened on the same day. Yemen, and Ottoman Puppet located right next to both Oman (British Puppet) and the Middle Eastern section of the British Raj, had it's capital finally attacked by the British Empire. Superior-in-Number Indian and Omani Forces stormed Yemen's Defenses, but the Yemeni Army, while under siege and had no reinforcements, were holding on. If they managed to hold on, and if the Ottoman Empire could take the Suez Canal, it could be possible for them to save Yemen. However, Yemen didn't have that much long, and the Battle of the Sinai was still raging. Some good news needed to come, or else the Kaiser would really start throwing a fit.'

The Kaiser's wish for something good to happen again in the war came true on the Tenth of December. On that day, Serbia officially surrendered to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, thus giving the German-leaning nation of Bulgaria incentive to join the Weltkrieg. With Serbian and Montenegrin Defeat, along with assured Albanian, and so long as Russia doesn't pierce Austria-Hungary again, Romanian Neutrality, Bulgaria had every reason to join the Central Powers. For one, this would eliminate the lingering hostilities between the Ottoman Empire and the Bulgarian Tsardom once and for all, they would gain Macedonia, and could prove their Balkan Superiority by fighting in the war on the winning side. When German, Austrian, and Turkish Ambassadors arrived in Sofia, the Bulgarian Tsar welcomed them with open arms, for he knew what they would ask. He openly stated that Bulgaria would side with her new comrades in the Central Powers, and all at once, the war was changed. Germany now had land access to the Ottoman Empire, the fairly large Bulgarian Army could be sent to the Eastern Front, Middle-Eastern Front, or the impending Western Front. The Bulgarian Tsar made the right decision in joining the Central Powers, as now, citizens in Sofia could sleep quietly knowing that they would not be defeated, after all, the Mighty German Empire was on their side!

As if on cue by some cosmic figure, German Armies on the Eastern Front finally made breakthroughs and found victory in a sea of defeat. The Prussian North Army finished up defeating the Russians in their sector, completely breaking the Entente Troops in the region. The Battles of Vilejka and Borisov spelled out Russia's Defeat in the North, but that wasn't even the best part. The Silesian Middle Army managed to defeat the Russian Empire at Nowogrodek, paving a narrow roadway to the last of the Non-Russian Key Cities besides the ones in Estonia and Ukraine - Minsk. If Minsk were to have the German Flag reign high over it, the Russians would suffer heavy morale losses, and more and more people would lose faith in the Kaiser's Cousin. In addition, the Greeks smartly decided to stay out of the war when Bulgaria join, rather than join the Entente in an attempt to war with their Balkan Rival. The last bit of news once again came from the Ottoman Puppet of Yemen, despite the odds being stacked against them, the Yemeni Army actually managed to defeat the Omani and Indian Troops. Yemen was save for now, and thus, another fortnight ended, with new allies and shocking defeats all being presented to Germany and her Allies. The war is not won, but that doesn't mean it can't be.

End of Chapter VIII: Battle on the Ice
That's it I guess, for now anyway. I say that a lot don't I? Anyhow, I hope you all enjoyed this Chapter. The last Chapter of 1914 will best the next chapter, and after that, brace yourself for the Year of Battles. Well, since Darkest Hour WW1 Scenarios usually last only up to 1916 anyway (unless like you are playing as Britain or France), I think that this year will basically be like 1916 in which the decisive battles will occur. And like 1918, 1916 of the game will be when everything comes crashing down, either for Germany (hopefully not) and or the Entente. I also don't know if I want to end the AAR strictly right after WW1, or intervene in Russia, of course analyze and give an epilogue, then end it. But that's along way from now, so let's just enjoy the ride while it lasts. Goodbye!

It would be nice to have an epilogue with the German intervention in Russia and possibly the interwar years, just to show what Germany's been up to after the war. It would also lead back into Kaiserreich, if you decide to try it again. But I'd be okay if you ended it in 1918 with the end of the war. I think a perfect place to end it is the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, or whatever treaty you'll force upon the Entente when you win.

I think one of those are something I'll end up doing.
Heil dir im Siegerkranz, Herrscher des Vaterlands!
Heil Kaiser Dir! Für Thron und Reich!

Surely at least someone got sacked for the bloodbath? Was the commander in charge sent to the Balkans at least?

Well thats exactly what happened to Falkenhayn in real life, albeit it was because he failed at Verdun, Sarny is still being fought over. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Falkenhayn is given considerably less power in the coming year. Ludendorff and Hindenburg either dodged a bullet or are facepalming right now.

If Russia is causing this blood bath, I don't dare to imagine what would happen in France.

Chapter IX: Over By Christmas

"Any man still in the British Army Officer Corps still believing the war can be won by Christmas while France favors inaction and the Royal Navy lies sunk in the Mediterreanen needs to be thrown out into the Atlantic." -Herbert Henry Asquith, British Prime Minister, December 1914

Russian Soldiers moving along a Russian Trench during the Battle of Sarny, New Years Eve, 1914. The Battle of Sarny would go well on into the 'Year of Battles' of 1915.
The Year of 1914 was coming to a close, and unlike many wars before it, the war would not cease by the Winter. In fact, it has seemed to have deepened, with German and Russian Soldiers spilling their blood at Sarny on a scale thought to be impossible. The Kaiserreich and Russian Empire would not be the only ones fighting however, Germany's ally in the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire, has been fighting the British and the Russians. The Ottomans, like the German Empire, were waging a two-front war, and with careful planning and professionals in charge, the war wasn't ending up badly for the Sultan. In the North, Turkish Armies began their own Winter Offensive against Russia in the Caucuses Region, attacking their main fortifications at Kars. While the attack was going well, it should be noted that the Russians were not only entrenched, but also given additional time and cover by the Caucuses Mountains. What the Russians don't have, which is usually their only strength, are numbers. Ottoman Forces attacking from both Eastern Anatolia and Turkish Occupied Persia have the upper hand in that regard. On the downside, the offensive in the North remains to hold any meaningful results. Down South, it was a different story. This was the only front the Western Entente bothered fighting in for the most part, and that was the Egyptian Front.

Since Ottoman entry into the Weltkrieg in October, the Turkish Armies did not need to be told to advance as quickly as possible into British Egypt. Everyone knew that the Suez Canal was the lifeline of the British Empire to her Asian-Australian Colonies, without it, that part of Britannia's War Effort could be made null and void. This would greatly tip the scale of the war into the Central Powers' hands, and pave the way for a possible Turkish Invasion of North Africa. It all however hinged on how the Battle of the Sinai Peninsula turned out. With 21 Ottoman Divisions attacking against merley eight British Divisions, it seems impossible for them to fail. Thing is, those British Divisions have been dug in their since the war started in July, are better equipped, and aren't disorganized like their Ottoman Counterparts. To remedy this, the Ottoman High Command asked Austria-Hungary to actually use it's enormous and formidable navy to project power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Vienna agreed, and with this new fleet at the Sultan's Disposal, the Austro-Hungarian Navy butchered its way to Egypt's Coast. Austro-Hungarian Ships in the Dardanelles destroyed the Anglo-French Invasion Fleet, stopping it from it's suspected goal of taking Constantinople by Sea. They massacred the two ships committing this act, the HMS Europa and the Cassard (FRA) before making their way to the Nile Delta. There, the Austro-Hungarian Navy scored another victory against the Royal Navy, dealing a heavy blow to their offensive operations by sinking the HMS Penelope and three British Troop Transports. It truly was enough to make an old German Sailor proud of their southern cousins, so much for the British ruling all the Waves.

German Colonies were once thought to be so mighty by the German Public, that evidently was wrong. How far the German Colonial Reach has fallen, now all that remains in Africa are just dust and echoes. Only one colony has survived without needing to succumb to Guerrilla Campaigns, and that would be Deutsche-Kameroon. It has largely been swallowed up by Entente Armies, but the core middle region remains loyal to the Kaiser. Naval Ports are still open, but while it would be ideal to extract the Kameroon Army to fight in Europe, it cannot happen. The reason being, even if a transport got through the undeclared British Blockade, it would also need to reach Africa which takes time, and getting back could prove fatal if the British Attack. The German Colonial Army is low on men, food, ammunition, and just about everything needed to wage war, Africa will most definitely be a big red and blue Entente blob by the war's first anniversary. The Situation wasn't that much better in the Far East. Australian Divisions finally militarily seized Deutsche-Neu Guinea, capturing the colonial governor and adding another German Colony to the Entente's list of graves. The German Situation outside of Europe has really soured, this is one area where the Kaiser needs to improve on should the war be won. There was no bright shining sun coming for the noble defenders of Germany this time.

The Eastern Front. Ravaged by war for nearly six months, it seems all that action and buildup was coming to it's ultimate climax during the Battle of Sarny. Already that battle had produced more casualties than the entire Baltic Campaign while also providing little closure. There was no end in sight, it all was a hellish meat grinder with soldiers on both sides committing brave acts of heroism and atrocity. Elsewhere, the front lines barely moved in the dead of snow. Russia successfully warded off the Austro-German Attacks in their rear in Southern Ukraine and the Romanian Border Region. In the North however, the Russians abandoned Vilekja, and in Belarus, the Russians were handed another spanking at Slutsk. Turning back to the Battle of Sarny, it continued to rage on without end. It was war without end. Austrian Soldiers managed to take Fort Perun which was located in the heart of the destroyed town. German Soldiers also began a attack on Sarny from the North across the Sluch River and from Brest-Litovsk. Now, from a battle that a 6 on 6 battle, had now envoloped more than fifty German, Austrian, Hungarian, and Russian Divisions, all fighting for a sliver of territory. A gateway to Ukraine yes perhaps, but will it in the end be worth it? The Battle looked like it would even continue on into January, a thought that haunted the Soldiers of Germany.

However, one must realize that every soldier must do their part in order to achieve victory. On the 25th of December, Christmas 1914, something truly amazing happened all across the Eastern Front, from Riga to Romania. We are perhaps going too fast, the night before, Christmas Eve, Russian Soldiers who were on guard were amazed by the German Trench across from them. As guns fell silent, singing could be heard from the German Soldiers. They were singing an old German Christmas Carol - Silent Night/Stille Nacht. It was even reported that across from the Russians stationed near Minsk, a single German Commander got up from the Trench and went over the top. He did so without a rifle in his hand or a sidearm to pull out. No, instead he came out with a homemade Christmas Tree. He turned to his fellow German Comrades in the Trench and they sang louder and louder, giving off and odd sense of peace in time of war. The German Commander then turned around, and walked further into No Man's Land. A Russian prepared to shoot the German Soldier, but was stopped by his superior officer. They let the German plant the Christmas Tree firmly in the middle of the two trenches and allowed him to go back to his side. Singing Christmas Joy was all around the air that night, and it would be a night no one would ever forget. If you thought nothing could top this, fortunately, you would be incorrect.

On Christmas Day, German Soldiers went over the top without weapons in their hand, while they did so cautiously, they weren't slaughtered. Instead, they were greeted with open arms by their Russian Enemies who too went over the top. All around the Eastern Front, No Man's Land suddenly became Christ's Land. All throughout the day, not a single soldier was killed, all experienced true peace. The Russians and Germans played sports with each other, they danced, they sang, the laughed, and in Christmas Spirit, they gave. It was something unseen of before, especially in Modern War. But at the end of the day, those calling the shots are not those receiving the bullets. At the end of each rifle, there is just a man, and in the end, we're all Brothers in War. We're Human.

End of Chapter IX: Over By Christmas

Well folks, that is it for today. The year of 1914 is finally over, and we can go on into 1915 knowing that we'll finally be able to kick French butt, but (Ha!) that is all I will tell you about that. In any case, Happy Holidays, and I will be making a 1914 Year Review, detailing our victories and defeats. I haven't got much else to say other than that, well actually that was a lie. I thank each and everyone one of you reading this AAR, It's been mostly a side project due to life however that can't stop the joy I feel when writing this AAR. I can tell it isn't as popular per say as Hail To Thee In Victor's Crown, but in my opinion it gives off a better vibe. I don't know where I'll go after this AAR is over (I will make others), but I am truly humbled to know that I'll have you all at my back. Thank you and goodbye.

End of 1914: Military Results/Future Plans

"Could you imagine what would have happened if we listened to Schlieffen?" -Theobald Theodor Friedrich Alfred von Bethmann-Hollweg, Chancellor of Germany

----------------------------------------------

1914 - Bekämpfen
It has already been so long since the beginning of the Weltkrieg, and now it has grown even further than imagined. German Armies occupy Warsaw, Riga, Vilnius, and are on the gates of Kiev, Minsk, and Tallinn. The German Empire's Colonial Reign has been utterly smashed into pieces by the British and Japanese Empires, carving out the Reich's rightful land, while at the same time, they are unable to attack directly into the Kaiserreich. Already, millions of men have died, and thousands more wounded and or fighting on the frontlines. This war could have been avoided if the Great Powers of Europa weren't looking for an excuse to send young boys to die for the old. One spark in the Balkans has now lead to the biggest war in all of the World's History. Nothing has ever compared to this War to End All Wars, and hopefully, nothing will ever come close to this carnage again. However, we must review our gains and mistakes in the year of 1914. As we enter the new year of 1915, it will be an uphill struggle, but if the German Empire and her Iron Allies stay true to the cause of victory, then there is nothing that can defeat the German Fatherland.

Casualties

Untitled 15.png

Entente Losses: 1,051,340
---------- Central Powers' Losses: 612,518
Untitled 17.png
Untitled 16.png

The first point that shall be discussed will be the amount of casualties both sides of the Weltkrieg have had thus far and how it may affect the rest of the war. As you can see, the Entente has have had their butts handed to them, compared to the Kaiser's Losses. Already, one million men have died for the Entente Cause of destroying Germany, and it hasn't gone so well for those fortunate to survive has it? To be fair, 90% of all Entente Casualties have been attributed to the expandable Russians. Say what you will about the Land of Frogs and Marshes, but at least they have the tenacity to go on even with these types of losses. Soon, Russia itself will exceed the casualties of all Entente Deaths in 1914, including their own. That is, if the current trend of the Eastern Front is going as it is. Mind you, this doesn't include Sarny Casualties as that battle is still in progress, therefore, the numbers could be even higher.

Either way, it's become apparent that Russia can't keep on taking these losses if it expects to come out of the war alive. The Motherland might soon be populated by mothers if every son of Russia is killed, not by already superior Austro-German Arms, but by the stupidity of the country's leaders and their failure in war. Keeping this in mind, the Russians should be out of the war by the end of 1915, the earliest being the summer, the latest in the late fall. Either way, the Russian Empire is finished, doubly so if Sarny is won. The rest of the Entente on the other hand? Well, they have not been bled white like the Russians have, nor have they suffered any colossal loss of land. France still holds all their territory, and have a large surplus of fighting men, reinforced by their colonies and the British Military.

Taking them down will not happen if Russia takes Germany down with it in terms of casualties, the Western Front may be the most important, but that does not diminish the value of the East. The only thing keeping the Entente in the West at bay are the Ottomans in Egypt and Alsace-Lorraine. If the French bypass Alsace-Lorraine, the best way through the Swiss Confederation, would transform the war on a bad scale. Built up resources in the West would have to be spent on keeping the small mountain country alive and kicking, while also holding off what seems to be an Italian Entry into the Weltkrieg on the Entente's side. All in all, on paper the Central Powers are doing better than the Entente, but in reality, the opposite might be true.

Italy

kingdom-of-italy-flag.png

If there was one crucial nation in Europa that we've been ignoring for some time, it would be that of the treacherous Kingdom of Italy. Despite having the best relations with Kingdom of Italy and both Germany and Italy wanting peace with each other, the same could not be said for Germany's Southern Brother: Austria-Hungary. The Austro-Hungarian Empire is the most multicultural nation in all Europe, and one of those cultures are the Northern Italians under Austrian Rule. While most are probably content with this, the Kingdom of Italy isn't. Italy will join the side who can promise them more, and all Germany can promise the Italians are some French Colonies in Africa and the land they themselves sold to France in order to win back Venice from the Austrians. The Entente on the other hand would give the Italian Menace whatever it wanted, from colonies to it's full irredenta. This could not be allowed to happen, the Kaiser didn't care if Italy had good relations with the German Empire, if Italia was to wage war with Austria with the backing of the Entente, then so be it. Berlin would fight alongside Vienna no matter what, for they of the same blood and the same cause. Maybe if Austria had given up some land to Italy, or if the Italians weren't so stubborn, then there would perhaps be another front for France to fight, but instead, there will be another for the Austro-Hungarians.

The Kingdom will get what's coming for them if they do follow up on the Entente's lies. What will probably seal the deal is the fact that the Ottoman Empire has aligned with the Kaiserreich, and the Ottomans are sworn enemies of the Italians, only just recently getting out of war with the Italians. In fact, that was the whole reason the Turks decided to side with Germany. The effects of this were seen in 1914, when Ottoman backed Libyan Rebels took control of most of the Italian Colony. There isn't much left to discuss, Italy will be the Reich's Enemy in the future, let us hope the fighting won't scare the two nations forever, and that one day, friendship could be restored. After all, Italy was the only country in Europe to know the pain of disunification for so long, it is only natural that the two would would day be allies once more. Unfortunately, that day is not today.

The Entente Is Expanding

Untitled 18.png
worcs-624x424.jpg

Earlier in the year of 1914, the British Empire fully demonstrated the power their web of connections by forcing the Japanese Empire into the war on the side of the Entente in early September. While not as shocking as it could have been, the fact that the far flung Japanese were pushed into the conflict only meant that the Entente could influence other nations to do the same, but closer and farther. The most obvious candidates for Entente Expansion are the Italians, but that shouldn't rule out the Greeks or Belgians, nor the very susceptible United States of America, the Netherlands, Portugal, and the Luxembourgians. Italy joining the Entente is not much of an if question but a when, explaining their side of the story has already happened anyway. Greece and Belgium are way different beasts all together however.

Greece was ruled by two people with conflicting differences, the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. The Royalist Greeks supported neutrality or even an alliance with Germany, to protect Greek Borders from Bulgarian Expansion, but more importantly, Entente Occupation. You see, ever since the war started, Greece has had three chances to become an enemy of Germany, but it never did. The first time was when it was honor-bound by alliance with Serbia to help them, but no Greek wanted to help a nation who held Macedonia hostage. The second time was when France opened negotiations with the Greeks in order to gain a 'base' to funnel Anglo-French Troops into the Balkan Slaughter, just as Serbia was crumbling. The Greeks once again said no, and the final time was when Bulgaria joined the Central Powers. The Greeks could have easily entered the war on the Entente side in order to fulfill some test of Balkan Superiority, but that never happened. Why? Because Greece was lead by King Constantine I, and he was married to the Second Kaiser's Daughter, Sophie of Prussia. As such, he had no interest in declaring war on the nation who Greece was now tied royally with, but that Parliamentarians disagreed. They were nothing but Entente Lapdogs, having fantasies of Greece with Byzantine Borders. No matter what, the Royalists must stay in charge, otherwise Greece would become an Entente Puppet. If that happened, well, the Balkan Front would light up again, and that's something no one wanted.

Then there was Belgium. Belgium, unlike the Hellenic Kingdom, was no friend of the Kaiser's Germany. Belgium basically was another French Province, just under the protection of the British. In fact, it was refreshing seeing a firebrand nation like Belgium who'd love to spout many insults toward Germany be shut up at the face of German Arms. The only thing that would bring them into war would be a direct German Invasion, but the Kaiser has suspended all plans for an invasion of Belgium for the time being. Russia First, France for Dessert. There was also Portugal, but the Portuguese wouldn't be so much of a threat even if they joined. With all their manpower, they wouldn't even make a difference, the Swiss would make more of an impact than Lisbon would ever. The only reason Portugal would join would be because of the historical English Alliance, it'd be an old time's sake thing.

Luxembourg wouldn't dare do anything, like Belgium, but it's because they literally have no army. Luxembourg could fall to a single German Division, why that nation isn't apart of Germany, France, or Belgium is appalling. Any who, with those four out of the way, that left to nations that had a complicated relationship with both sides: The United States of America, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The USA would be a tough powerhouse of a nation to fight, and it would be virtually unstoppable if it actually made use of it's industry for Total War, thing is, no one in America wanted war, especially with it's large German Population. Americans might not like to admit it, but a significant portion of their country are from the Fatherland, and they have no desire to war with Germany. Add this to the fact that America and Isolation go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly, the USA has no chance of entering the war. At least without gaining high dissent in the process. Finally, there was the Netherlands. While not particularly fond of the British Empire, France, or Belgium, it should be noted that the Netherlands has more to gain than lose if it allied with the Entente, should the need ever come. The Netherlands is also a target of the Schlieffen Plan, while it may be cut out in the future, all options are still on the table, and if Amsterdam refuses to cooperate with Germany, there will be a reckoning. The British Arachnid has created a large web, catching countries like Spiders do Flies, and it won't be long before it eats it's prey.

The Battle of Sarny

Untitled 14.png
Dec15LN-blog480.jpg

Truly a battle to be remembered, the Battle of Sarny was far from over. Started on the Third of December, 1914, the Battle of Sarny was the pinnacle of the German Winter Offensive in 1914, going on into 1915, it remains unclear how the battle will turn out. The Battle so far has probably produced more dead men than any battle in previous history, 70,000 German Soldiers being slaughted by Russian Machine Gunfire on the first day of fighting alone. It was the worst day in Prussian Military History, could you imagine the carnage? Or how about the thousands of German Mothers and Wives being told that their Son or Husband has been murdered in the field of duty. It was a terrible battle, that was for sure. The battle was also reshaping the minds of the German General Staff, on how the war would be won, and how Prussian Military System was flawing.

While probably the best in Europe, Germany's Military had now proven that it could be slaughtered en mass. How could this of happened? Because of bad leadership. If the officer was not doing his job correctly, then neither would the soldier. Thus, Erich von Falkenhayn, 'mastermind' behind the Battle of Sarny, was sacked by the Kaiser himself, replaced with Erich von Ludendorff and Paul von Hindenburg once again. The real victors of the Eastern Front were these two men, they prevented the Russians from taking East Prussia at the Battle of Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes, and then the encirclement of an entire Russian Army in Russian Poland. With these two once again back at the helm, the Battle of Sarny would now have a higher chance of success. Artillery left doing nothing on the Western Front was shipped to the Eastern Front, specifically to Sarny, where German Big Guns utterly pounded Russian Positions. Coupled with Austrian Advances all along Sarny and Ukraine once again, the Battle of Sarny hopefully would now end in the Kaiserreich's Victory, that however remained to be seen. The key to winning the Eastern Front was in the German Army's hands, they just needed to learn how to use it on a rotting Russian House. It won't be long before the Winter Palace dawns the Kaiser's Banner!

1915 - Jahr der Schlacten

Ironheart 4.png

And so, with all this knowledge in mind, we move into the year of 1915. The Year of Battles is upon us, and German Armies both in the West and the East will see through until absolute victory! The Entente Lapdogs are on the ropes in Russia, they are on the verge of full on civil war! The German Empire's main objective of the next year will be destroying the Russian Empire and forcing the Land of Marshes and Frogs into isolationist suffering. The Russians are not to be allowed to regain their strength, and so once German Armies dine in Moscow, there shall be a punishment far worse than anything seen before. The second goal will be protecting the Western Front against the French-British Entente. They will most definitely strike Switzerland once the Snow melts away the Spring comes back. When that time comes, the Italians too will probably attack the Austro-Hungarian Empire in its rear, and when both of these attacks happen, the German Eagle in all of it's glory will swoop down to save its brothers. Germany is not fighting this war because it is under threat of persecution and or because of losing's sake, but because the Entente has one goal: The Annihilation of the German State. Long has Germany been disunified and puppeted by other European Powers, long has the Nation of Poets and Intellectuals succumbed to foreign thievery, now, the Fatherland will see justice inflicted upon all Europe for the crimes it has committed. Germany Over All! 1915 shall be the year the Entente crumbles, and above the corpses, Germany will still stand.

----------------------------------------------
Finally, 1914 is done and over with Honestly, were it not for 1917, 1914 would have probably been the most boring year of the war. Anyway, I'm going to start playing Darkest Hour again on this scenario, it'll be really fun playing, hopefully it won't be as equally annoying. Anyway, I hoped you enjoyed this synopsis, and goodbye!

Subbed! Very nice AAR :)

I agree, not to mention that visual presentations are wonderful. Especially those images at begining of chapters/sections are really suitable for the Great War enviroment.

Yes, I discovered some of these lovely postcards. Always great for immersion.

Thanks!
Update: I probably won't be releasing any more updates for the rest of 2016, real life stuff is probably going to prevent me from doing so anyway. I might be able to get something out in between Christmas and New Years, or the first week of January, but thats all you should expect. As of now, this AAR is pretty much on break. I need some time away too, I've burned myself out from all this writing, the Holidays are a nice time to chill out. But, I will give you all a little present.

Happy Holidays!

Do you hear the Germans sing?
Singing the song of iron men?
It is the music of the Germans
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of their hearts
Echoes the beating of their drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes.
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with them?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!
THEY SHALL NOT PASS!

Well, so much for Swiss neutrality. RIP Entente. The Swiss will shoot twice, stab everybody with their pocket knives and chocolate bars, and go home to their bunkers.:p

Also, DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES! Let the German eagle crush the cowardly Frenchmen! We shall be marching under the Eiffel Tower by Christmas!

They invade Switzerland? But don't they know?
Funny enough, Switzerland gets like 16 divisions in the WW1 scenario when invaded, their all militias but their still something.
