I was wondering if there is anybody out there with the skill to add some updated ship graphics so that we wont have wooden broadside ships fighting the battle of Tsushima Straights in 1905! I know that to update all the land uniforms to a more 1880s look would probably be too much of a burden for this mod, but if somebody could just do one or two sets of ships then the same graphic would work for all countries.

Unfortunately Im not much of a programmer and even more useless as graphical artist, but i would be willing to do research and help out anyone with the appropriate skills in any way i could. I know a lot of sources on the web to pull up images of ships from the last quarter of the 19th century.

New Art

Does anyone know if it's even possible to insert new graphics into the game? I know games like CivIII are very open to developing your own graphics (if you have the time and resources), but this only after the format is known. Does anyone know the format? Because if you did, I'm sure there would be some CivIII artists willing to do a quick ironclad and dreadnought.

Just a thought.

All unit graphics is stored in bmp files (see gfx\map\units\bmp)

I'm fairly sure you can edit them on the painter that comes with your P.C, the only trouble is it is very tedious, as you have to do each position of a compass with slightly different pixel positions, so they do the 'walking/sea-going'action when you point them this way or that. Still, I may be able to help design one set of a point, if you find seven other people to do the rest, I have a lot of Schoolwork at present and little spare time. However, you would first have to show us your choise of Battleship and ironclad. Could even update those uniforms, if you want, so long as you can show what they should look like...

If we were to stick to ships facing in only one direction, then there's a wealth of material available online for other games. If not, then our only option is to convert moving ship graphics from Imperialism since its *.gob files can be opened with pretty much any Windows "resource editor" (http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/).

Oh that's easy to get rid of, you just cut the ironclad out and paste the green unit background all EU units have over the sea or just paint it out. You can then just rotate the units about.

Here, I've had a go and got the ironclads facing SW.
Er, how do I show it, and who wants it?

Yeah I might try that for a quick fix. The destroyer graphic from HOI might pass for a general ironclad graphic (since ironclads were generally much smaller than circa 1890 and later battleships). I may try a stab at this myself if someone can give me some technical help on how to insert it back into the game.

Now I pretty much could figure out how to replace the Level 4 EU2 Man-O-War graphics with the Destroyer graphics by renaming some files. What I would like to know is whether it is possible to add new levels of ships into AON or are we basically stuck with the four levels from EU2 which we would reuse with new graphics?

For instance I would like to see a redesigned naval tech which I would eventually be willing to try to produce some graphics sets for, with say a (1) 1830s-1850s class of Steam Frigates, (2) 1860s-1870s Broadside/Center Battery Ironclads, (3) 1880-1890s Armoured Cruisers (4) circa 1900 and later Battleships.

Now that AON is up and running Id be willing to try to fool around with a modeling program and try to do these one at a time, but I want to know where they can be inserted first.

Would these have to totally replace the 4 classes of ships in EU2 or could a level 5-8 be added?

Yeah I will do that. Unfortunately I tried switching the HOI Cruiser files for the L-4 Navy files in AON and it didnt work quite right. It produces a row of ghost ships off to the right so maybe somebody in those forums will know a way to fix this.
