A side affect of this thread http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=20335

was the realiazation that the Irish flag is still incorrect in EU2. Was hoping to see something different than the 1798 version, but it would appear that finding the official 1419 Irish flag, like almost everything else about that medieval nation is proving difficult.

One thing for sure though, the current flag is most definately incorrect, and at the time was only a provincial flag.

Any more info would be appreciated, and perhaps a change to the "official" EU one sometime soon.

I think your problem is that Ireland maybe really didn't have a flag for the whole island being that, as someone else pointed out before, the high chief was like the HRE. On the maps I've seen of Ireland at the time it was cut up into about a half-dozen small "countries(?)"(there is another word to describe them but I am at lost for that at the moment). That may be your problem.

For the heck of it I suggest the St. Patrick Flag. It had only started its use in the late 1700's, but the flag (Similiar to Scotlands, but with a red cross with white background)would fit in just great with the flags of other nations.

I've said the same thing about the welsh flag to no avail.
What was the flag of Brian Boru?? forgive me my spelling of his name.

I like the Harp though, Irish regiments used it all through the middle ages.

That's the correct way to spell Boru :)

No one really knows Boru's flag, though the theory is blue and gold. The emblem most commonly thought to be an arm holding a sword along with the sun, the other is the three lions of the O'Brian crest.

The sword and sun is probably correct, as it derives from Celtic legend, while the three lions are a much later O'Brien shield (during Henry VIII's submission of Ireland) The three lions are the same as used on the current England team's badge.

AFAIK, the green flag wasn't used until the very late 18th century. Ireland was never associated with the color green until very late in it's history.

As there seems to be no definitive answer my vote would go for the blue flag with harp, although the sunburst looks very nice, no one would recognize it as an Irish flag :)

How about a flag with a shamrock on it. The shamrock has been a national symbol of Ireland since the time of st. Patrick so have a flag with it might work.

Hmmm

Well I updated my site, there you can download those blue/green Ireland-shields. Unfortunately I wasn't able to create a good blue flag, so I added the green-white-orange flag...
There are also some screenies... well 3 of them, but if you have any, I will put them up also...:)

Are you referring to the "five fifths"?

I think the O'Neill family crest should be the national flag of Ireland. Everyone knows that the O'Neill clan is the greatest family in all of Irish history and "where ever an O'Neill sits is always the head of the table!" Yes, I am apart of the O'Neill clan. And YES "O'Neill" IS the Irish way to spell it. None of this English "O'Neal" or "O'Neil" crap!:D

Well, Sumer, you will be happy to hear that the monarchs for Ireland in EU2 are the O'Neills, the Kings and Earls of Tyrone...

Sumer: I think the O'Briens might take issue with that :D though we O'Deas were never strong enough to be one of the 'big boys', we did manage to burn Bunratty Castle down, and split Richard de Clare's Norman skull in two :D

Me and some of the other Irish history buffs are working on a few modifications to make Ireland more 'historical', as I've always felt a united Ireland made them stronger than they really were (granted, they're still damn hard to play, but they SHOULD be harder :D )

If you're interested in helping, drop by the thread in the 1492-1792 forum called "Irish History folks please read"

Glad to see all the O'Neills are in as monarchs already, that will save me having to make a leader list for them!
